Absolutely, if you have a particular goal in mind before you set out and the guide meets this goal I tip every time. If you take into consideration the tackle, fuel and other expenses $250 - $400 is not much. I believe if he works hard enough and exceeds your expectations he is worthy of a tip!

I've worked as a deckhand on a guides boat. He ran off shore to the rigs out of Port A. I caught bait, gaffed fish, fetched drinks, iced fish, baited hooks, and cleaned up. Basically whatever needed doing. The guide paid me $50 and the guests usually tipped me a twenty or something. I worked my butt off but i couldn't afford to pay the guide enough to be on his boat and learn all that I learned from him.

you don't HAVE to tip guides but should give him a tip according to his efforts,or at the very least buy his lunch

Make sure you tip the guy that fixes your car, the plumber that fixes your leaky pipe, the guy that cuts your grass, etc, etc.

Tip a waitress for good service, tip a bartender for cold beer, strong drinks, tip the pizza delivery guy for getting there before the 45 minute mark.

Tipping a guide who is in business for themselves and has already set a price for this service? Nope don't think so.

I run my own business (safety consultant), I have a set price for my services. I have never received a 'tip' for doing what I like to do, and I do it well.

Some guides charge upwards of 250 for a 1/2 day trip (5 hours), 400+ for an all day adventure- that equates to 50/hr, and no guarantee that you will get any fish.

and remember those folks I mentioned above, well they are barely making the min wage on an hourly basis when you average it out.

I pay a guide to take me on a lake I have not been on before and hopefully I will catch a few fish and possibly learn a few techniques to fish that lake on my own- that is what I am paying a fishing guide for.

unless he brings a hot pizza and cold beer- then he will be tipped generously:)

Interesting topic.....I have only been on 2 guided trips in the flats of the Florida Keys, and I tipped the guide 20%. As a guide, I usually get tipped 18-20%. I thought it was the norm to tip guides....especially if you got out of the trip what you were expecting!!

I tip everyone that guides me. They don't make $50 an hour. They have to pa yfor gas, oil, rods reels , and bait. Every time I take my boat out it cost me $150.

That's rediculous. $150? Maybe if you are driving a couple hours to the lake, then running 20 miles all over the lake. Buying expensive lures. But a in a normal scenario? No way...

I know they have to pay for all that, but most guides live close to the lakes they guide on, launch near where they want to fish, and they don't buy rods and reels every trip.

I'm not saying a guide never deserves a tip. As stated, i have tipped guides who did an exceptional job, but it shouldn't be a given. I posy them for a service. If they get more money from me, its because they went above and beyond, and EARNED the tip. Not, oh the trip was $400, and 20% is 80, as here's 480$.

If they want more money to cover their expenses, they can increase their rates.

I'll tip as well. I was just out at Fork last weekend and was talking to Cam at Lake Fork Marina. He said that some of the guides burn up $150 in gas a day (boat only). That's not including gear and tackle. I don't know about you guys but that is a lot of fuel.

I've only not tipped a guide once, I wasn't very thrilled nor confident in his techniques or service. I also felt his fee was a little on the high side to begin with but he was the only guide we could get on short notice. Needless to say next trip to the coast, I'll book a recommended guide way in advance.

Interesting topic on the fuel costs, I remember our guide/guides on the coast going up on the price when fuel skyrocketed a few years back but prices stayed up when fuel went back down. My paint prices have gone up but the price of the jobs hasn't, just mine to eat. I price my jobs and the price is the price and I burn alot of fuel/tolls/tires/etc.....
