When creating a carolina rig, when you add the leader (?inches) are you just taking that much off a spool of your normal 12-14lb line, or is the leader different lb. test or different make more common?

Inches is up to you . Some like long leaders 3 foot or better and some like short it kind of depends on what your fishing say grass or hard bottom. 2 foot is a good start. somtimes I make up a few extra leaders and keep them in the boat and somtimes I just take more line off my reel to make a leader. some use different size line on leaders,Its is all what make you feel the best. I use 20 lb in most all the texas lakes.but thats just me

I have used mono, flourocarbon, and braid for Carolina rigging. I prefer 50lb braid or 20lb flouro for my main line and 20lb mono for my leader. Right now I have braid on my crig setup but may go back to flouro as I have been breaking off alot lately probably due to my braid fraying after being drug along the bottom for hours. Probably should retie more often. Also prefer to use tungsten weights.

Thanks for the info....wow 20lb test...this is going to take a lot of learning...so much different from my 6-8lb test on my rainbow trout rigs...

A lot of it is personal preference and what type of cover you're throwing it near. I usually go 17# test on the main line and then 14# on the leader unless the water is particularly murky.

Yea you need to use the heavier lines when fishing a C rig. Especially when fishing deep and with a heavy weight.

I use 20lb Big Game main line and 15lb Big Game leader. I never use a leader shorter than 3ft, most of the time it is 4 to 5ft.

I use 30# Stealth braid and a 15# fluorocarbon leader. With the braid using a tungsten weight will give you a better feel of what the bottom is made up of. As far as the length of the leader 18-36 inches depending on season and bait.

17# P Line CXX for main line & 12#-15# Fluoroclear for leader, depending on cover. Nearly always use 3'-4' leader with 3/4-1 oz weight. except early spring. Then go with 18" w/ 3/8 oz. Like snicker, I make up extra leaders with various hook sizes and carry them coiled up in a CD case.

I use 40# Braid. Usually Suffix 832. Then I use a 14# - 17# Gamma Co-Polymer or Big Game for a leader. This way if you hang up, you only loose the leader and braid will usually pull free before breaking. Although, I have broke it before.

Those that use braid as a main line.....are you pegging the weight at all? it has been my experience that the weight, no matter if it is brass/lead/tungsten, will cause the braid to weaken and break. The Tungsten weights I use have polished bores and I don't have this problem when using Flouro as a main line.

How often are you retying? What other components (beads/clackers/etc.) are you using between your weight and swivel?

I use 50lb power pro for main line and 20lb XPS flouro for leader line. I use a knot protector (gold) and bead on leader line. I've reduced my breakoffs by over 50% since switching from 17lb copoloymer as a main line and leader line. Fish keep eatin it so it's all good.....

Oh, BTW, my favorite bait for C-rig is ........FLUKE.........in watermelon candy. It represents a bluegill very nicely.

Good C-riggin,
Okie cheers

I use Carolina Keepers on 20# Big Game .... that way I can adjust the leader to the lake/fish and only have one knot to worry with.
