Spent from 10:00 last night to about 1:30 this morning at Kirby and did not get so much as a nibble. The fish were breaking all over last night, but neither I, my freind, or the guys next to us had any luck. I was using shrimp, my buddy was using shad, and the guys next to us were using chicken liver. My wife "misplaced" my punch bait, so I had to go buy some cocktail shrimp. Another freind went from about 1-8pm and got nothing as well. I'm bummed, I haven't seen such a slow night in years. frown

East side? We usually catch high numbers out there but never anything to really talk about

Cut shad is the ticket...big bloody pieces. Dead red if you have it.

Yes, it was on the East side. The shad was fresh, he had netted them at Phantom just an hour or so before we went out. Perhaps something weather related influenced their behavior...or lack thereof. There was no wind at all, maybe that had something to do with it. I knew I should have gone coyote hunting last night.

Wow, that is a first. It's usually the other way around. Catch bait at Kirby and head to Phantom. Kirby has taken a turn for the worst this year. It's always been tough for blues due to the amount of shad in there, but I really think the juggers have ignored the 5 fish over 20 inch limit. Game Warden rarely shows up. I've never seen him. I hear he comes in the mornings on week days though...which is not when juggers are hauling off their catch.

I don't really know why jugging is legal there. The lake isn't even 800 acres when full. Most lakes that size, especially ones fully inside a city's limits, outlaw anything but rod and reel. But again, if the game warden never shows up with a boat, you can't really get in trouble.

Then again, I could be all wrong and it could just be the lower water level (though it's only about 5 or 6 feet low thanks to the pumping in of effluent water by the city) or the constant fishing pressure it gets. I know of some people that go just about every day for at least 3 or 4 hours and they rarely catch more than a couple of decent blues. There are, or were, some 30+ pounders in there last year when TPWD surveyed the lake. They didn't shock up much of anything this spring. Who knows anymore.

I usually catch keepers on the north side of the cove with the fishing pier. Lots of dinks in Kirby though.
