Long-lining has two different meanings in fishing.

In saltwater it is used by commercial fishing vessels to string miles of single strand line with hundreds of hooks then winch the fish on board. Kind of like trotlines.

In bass fishing it is used to get crankbaits as deep as possible. First cast the crankbait out as far as you can then use the trolling motor with your reel in free-spool to peel off as much line as you have. Once all the line is out, start reeling. This coupled with small diameter line allows a deep-diving crankbait to get deeper than on a normal cast.

I see. Thanks.

When I was a kid, I would cast into one end of a tank and walk around to the other end with the bail open. I was long lining on a smaller scale, I guess.

Tried long lining 1 time recently after reading about it. Cast large crank as far as I could then moved away about 150 yards. Started cranking but little resistance----seems during cast or while bait was floating around the hooks got fouled in the line. That was my indication that I should not be long lining.
