This topic is a good one and made me want to tell this story! So on a very recent texoma trip a buddy and I tore up the channel cats and where at the. Leaning table when I boat came trolling up to the dock a 18 yr old kid was holding a rope! The dad asks me if there was a scale on the dock and I said yes, as it turned out the kid had caught a monster 56lb blue while striper fishing on a slab! He said that he had tied it out to keep it alive for a live weight BUT then told his son to go put it in the cooler! I nicely asked him why he would want to keep and kill such and monster cat! He politely said that he didn't have a camera on him and that that fish would have a lot of meat, I Asked him if he had Internet at home and he said yes. I then asked him if I took 10 photo's for him and emailed them To him And gave him 2 bags of my fillets would be consider releasing it and be said if his son was ok with it, his son said I told u dad,I hate eating fish, I think we should let it go, btw his sonn was smart enough to put the stringer through the lip And not the gills! So at this point I look over at the ramp and the youngster is waist deep in the water letting the fish freshen up! I was satisfied that the fish would make it so we took pics and we watched it swim away! The Main thing I took from this was the kid was just doing what his dad wanted instead of releasing it like he wanted too! Boy was that kids smile huge as that fish swam away!
I dont fish for a living but i LIVE TO FISH!

That is a great story. And good on you for talking that boy's old man into letting it go. You went about it just the right way. Offered to replace everything he would be missing by not letting it go. Most people just try to brow beat other people into their way of thinking but you made the soft sell work. Good job.

I've never practiced c&r before I began to fish with tff members. Caught my pb with Tom on twok. Like he said, the rules were set from the ramp. All big fish would be cpr only. I never thought id be releasing a 58, 55, 40, 30, and a couple 20's back in the lake that day. Not to mention watching Tom release his pb of 65#. I must admit a picture is truly worth a thousand words, and theres nothing like releasing a fish and taking the high road. If possible, filming your boat guests battle and release would be more than enough..

I respect those that c&r - it's thier decision, but don't tell me I should put my fish back. I enjoy eating what I catch. If it's legal...it's legal.
