Nice fish, but that's a male White Crappie.. They turn black when up shallow spawning.

Isn't the distinction between black/white crappie the presence of distinct vertical bars?
Im not an expert on this matter by any means; but it appeared to have the "black blotches" as opposed to the vertical bars.
Do the bars fade over time or is it a common misconception during spawning?

Yes white crappie, they have vertical bars all of the time.

Baiting her own hook took some time, but yes she can (Live shrimp, bluegill, chicken liver, etc.)

The true way to determain if it's a White or a Black Crappie is to count the Dorsal Spines.
White Crappie will have 5 or 6 Dorsal Spines.
Black Crappie will have 7 or 8 Dorsal Spines.
Now you know.
