Redears handsdown ! Can't beat them when it comes to fighting . Riogills always second for me smile Love the way those dunlap redears drag the line.

For the size the Longear for sure! boxing They are the most aggressive of the Sunfish and when they are active "LOOK OUT"! Getting em on Ultra Light is hard to beat! thumb

Riogills always have that second "kick" when you land them.

I agree with banker. They fight a lot bigger than they are. If only they came in 14" red ear size

I would say redbreasts, but it's not on the list. They leverage the current better than any like size sunfish IMHO.

For what's on the list, gotta be bluegills. Redears have the fighting benefit of being on the bottom most of the time. When you catch them together on the bottom the redears feel like a constant tug of war and slowly dragging and pulling away, while bluegills seem to be going in every direction at once. Kinda like SMB. They are making quick, powerful bursts and can make a run like a freight train (similar to shellcrackers) when they feel like there's a chance they can get off or sense something they can break you off on.

Shellcrackers are normally a big tractor pull bluegills of the same size have more tricks in the bag sometimes. Of course sometimes, they just swim in circles. I think a 8" bluegill would fight slightly harder than a 8" shellcracker. Since redbreasts are mostly found around current and just fight so hard in that current (compared to a similar sized "other" sunfish), a 8" redbreast gets my vote.

Similar sized warmouths, greenies and longears seem to fight just as hard, but maybe not as long. Longears can sometimes be the exception to that rule. They can be as agile and acrobatic as any big bream or black bass.

Great idea and nice poll DR.

There is no way a 12" bluegill fights harder then a 12" Rio Grande Pearch. Not to mention the Rio Grande can hit mammoth perportions!!!

I cought some in the 2.5lb range!!!

Darn thing felt like a 4lb bass!!!

I know it said pound for pound ounce for ounce but these goliaths of the group deserve their praise!!!

I caught a redear last weekend on a 8 inch grande bass worm and I thought I had a LMB on the end of the line. My vote say's redear.

Even though I chose the Longear for ounce to ounce fight, I got to agree with the above. The Rio is one heck of a fighting fish! duel

I can't put a Rio Grande Cichlid in the same category as the other sunfish. I can call it a panfish with other panfish (bullheads, crappie, sand bass, sunfish, rock bass, probably left some out), but just not a fair fight with other sunfish. Comparing sunfish to Rios is some what like comparing black bass to stripers. Apples and oranges IMHO.
