Yesterday while on a errand, I saw a family friend trying to start a lawnmower. I stopped to see if I could help. It was just out of gas. Mr & Mrs Chumbley are in their mid 60's. I bought some fishing lures from him last weekend at their garage sale. Thanks to those that responded to my request for info. Mr Chumbley is in a wheelchair since having a stroke a few years ago. The Chumbleys and my grand parents met at the hospital. My grandpa had a stroke the day before Mr C. They have lived 12 houses from each other for 28 years. After getting the mower started, Mr C and I talked for a while and then I decided to mow their yard so that Mrs C did not have to do it. When finished, Mr C and I talked and drank lemonade for a couple of hours. This morning I was mowing our yard and when I went inside, Mrs C was there. She said that she had brought me some things that Mr C wanted me to have. She said that he had said that he would rather I had and used them, than that they just sat in the garage. I went to my room to find 9 fishing rods and a box with 13 fishing reels. I have been fishing maybe 15 times in my life. First time was last summer. And really enjoy going even if I do not catch anything. All of my fishing has been bank fishing. Rollover Pass, intercostal canal, Anahuac Park and Sylvan Beach Park. All of my prior fishing has been bottom fishing with either an Abu Garcia 500 reel or a Shakespeare spinning reel. Are the small low profile reels OK to use the way I have been fishing? Or should I only use the larger baitcasting reels? Also, do you think it is OK to accept these? I told my Mom that I plan to mow Mr & Mrs Chumbley's yard whenever needed. I also told Mrs C that I would help them with any chores that thay may need help with. Thanks, Jason

Everything you've got is perfectly fine for catching any trout, redfish or flounder in the bay. I'd say you were well rewarded for good deeds done, good for you bud.

Great story. good interaction between young and old.
Do what you can for these folks. The fishing gear is good quality. If it has not been used for a while, you may need new line.
thanks

Great story buddy.
Go catch some fish with the old man's gear and show him the pictures. I'll bet that would make him happy.

Thank you Mr Oxner. Mr Mo, I just got finished putting new line on all of the reels. On the small baitcasters and spinning reels, I put Trilene Big Game 10#. On the bigger baitcasters, I put Sufix Tritanium Plus 14#. The 2 huge spinning reels got Andre Premium 20#. These were what my budget would allow.
Thanks for the replies.

Jason, You did a wondorful thing for Mr and Mr C. I am sure you did the chores out of the kindness of your heart and did not expect any reward. I'm totally impressed with your actions.
As far as the reels are concerned, I would ask Mr C when they were last cleaned. If it has been a while, take them in or do it yourself if you know how. Chances are that you will be keeping them for the rest of your young life. Take care of them son.
Tight lines...
Dave

I'm sure the old man will be very pleased and proud to see you stick some fish with that gear. Keep it and treasure it.
Don't forget also...you're gonna need a license now that you're 17. The free ride ends at 16.

Great job Jason!!! Lots of wisdom to be learned from the older generation! Liked the way you sat and talked with them the best! Now the best thing you can do is the next time you catch some fish take them some fresh fish and tell them it was caught with his tackle and watch them grin from ear to ear!!! Good job young man!!!

Just wanted to add my "Pat on the back" to you and your parents.I am still pretty active at 74 yrs young, but I always appreciate young folks come around to visit or help (or go fishing/ hunting) with me. You will make Mr/Mrs C's day every visit.
