Awesome Lane!
The essence of great writing is 'to take you there'. You certainly accomplished that... in spades. For those of us that have been there, thanks for taking us back. for those that haven't, it IS a little slice of heaven. Thanks for sharing for all.
Thank you SIR! (gotcha)

You are correct! I could visualize every sentence. I am a very picky reader and one whose interest is hard to keep. Therefore, I seldom read. If I could find books this well written that could captivate my interest, I would read all day long. I am reading Goodbye To A River. I started it over the weekend. IMO, not as well written as what Lane has done here, but a good read nonetheless.

Write a book and I will buy it. Great writing style. Easy to follow, no overuse of big word, a writing style that had me "hooked" from the first sentence.
And, great story by the way.
+1. Reminds me of reading from Samuel Clemens' work. Excellent read.

Well written...I enjoyed it and it really touched me, especially now.
My Dad's family was born and raised on the Brazos below Whitney at Smith Bend.
Many times I remember leaving Waco to camp and fish for the weekends during the summers when we were young teenagers. Catching grasshoppers for the trot lines, seining minnows for bass and crappie fishing around the log piles along the bank while wade fishing. My dad, me, older brother Jim, cousin Melvin and his dad, my Uncle J. camping out under low hanging trees so we could hang up the mosquito nets so we could sleep on our cots.
Your story really touched me. I wish I could bring back those days. We buried Uncle J at Coon Creek/Smith Bend Cemetery yesterday. He was 82 and always loved fishin' the river all his life. My dad is the last of that generation, at 88.
Thanks for bringing back some great memories.

Yep, we need to take advantage of knowing Lane, he won't be with us (or Chuck) long. Someone is going to offer him some serious money to write or do radio or tv as soon as they see some of his stuff. Good for you Lane, bad for us!

Lane, I didn't realize that was your story until I got to the end. I thought someone had reprinted a story from Outdoor Life or one of the other magazines. You really should start submitting some of your work if you haven't yet. It is certainly good enough.
