Ok. This is the last post I'm going to make on this topic.
There is no doubt that a LEO can write tickets for every single thing you are doing wrong, however, most of us expect an officer to look a little deeper at a situation. I've been pulled over by police probably close to 10 times and I've received 2 tickets ever. Every time I was pulled over, I was breaking some law, however, I got a little mercy due to my attitude and respect toward the officer and the nature of what was going on at the time. Once I was going too fast on the interstate and got pulled over, the office asked me where I was going and after I told him respectfully, he asked me to slow down - end of encounter. Another time I made a wide turn and was pulled over. I'm sure the officer thought I had been drinking. He asked me if I knew why he pulled me over and I answered. I was 100% sober - he looked at the circumstances and figured I wasn't being malicious and gave me a warning.
I think the people replying to this post are simply looking for a little middle ground and I'm sure if some of your "letter of law" people got a ticket for going 71 in a 70 you might expect the office to look at the circumstances and give you a warning.
No one is questioning weather the infractions discussed here were against the law, they were, no question. However, I think all of us would hope that a GW would say, "Sir, you know your son really is supposed to wear his pfd at all times, even when he has to pee unless the boat is anchored. I know it was only off for a second which is why I'm only giving you a warning, but if I see it off again, I'll need to write you a ticket." To me, that's common sense.
I don't like to see all the bickering on here. I know this is an annonymous forum and that often gives us a sense of freedom to say whatever we want, but we should always remain respectful and never condescending.
Thanks. Couldn't of said it any better.

Would you feel the same if the game warden told the Latino or Asian that kept an undersized bass he caught in his cast net not to do it again or he would write him a ticket?

Would you feel the same if the game warden stoppped the wakeboarder in the no wake zone and told him to stop making a four foot wake not to do it again or he would write him a ticket?

Would you feel the same if the game warden told the guy that had 10 fish over the limit not to do it again or he would write him a ticket?
These three questions are examples of complaints made right here on this board, and the consences was they should be ticketed. There have been complaints of people, kids included, not wearing life jackets. And you all asked...Where is the game warden?
Now, when the game warden does his job, you complain.

Yeah, this is straying away from the OP's original question.
The question asked was "is $170 fine excessive for a 'no PFD' ticket?"
The consensus answer seems to be: no it is not excessive.
The question was not "should the GW give a 'no PFD' ticket" or "how can I quibble over application of the PFD laws"

I didn`t figure it would end back there maybe mods can shut it down???? Why do you want the mods to shut it down? If you don't like it don't read it....geez. It's been a good thread with a lot of different opinions. It is the Open discussion area. So rather than keep everyone else from reading it, you should stay out of the thread if it bothers you. GMB

If your boy had to take a wizz and he took his jacket off so he didn't pee on hisself i think you would feel the way i do. If not then i guess you walk on water.

Chu Chu 1= you really get my goat, No one said hey let me off because i break the law everyday. The examples you give are about as dumb as a bag of as hol s. The kid took a pee put his jacket back on and a gw gave me a ticket. Yes i paid it. Yes it was wrong but i think a little judgement would of went a long way. If it would of happened to you i think your the kind of person that would of been the first one on here crying about it. My opinion of course.
