Well my boy just turned 8. He always wants to go with me when I go fishing. So I think he is old enough for his first yak. Any sugestions on what an 8 year old could handle.

My daughter turned 8 at the beginning of June and she fishes out of a Pescador 10 just fine. She does tend to get pushed around in the wind a little but that just makes her tougher .

Buy an adult sized yak. Not only will your son surprise you with his ability to handle it much sooner than you anticipated, but he'll have the opportunity to grow into it for several years. Plus the resale value will be higher, or you can keep it as a buddy yak later on.

Just a few suggestions for you, Maulibu Sierra 10, Malibu Mini-X, Native Ultimate 10, Native Redfish 12....very good, cheap, and he can grow with it. The Native MantaRay 10, The Pescador 10. These all are great beginner kayaks, and several on the list, he would be able to use well into high school. Hope this helps, and if I can be of any help, just let me know.

may 8 year old handles her Hurricane Phoenix 140 (14', 28"W and 50lbs) no problems... I think getting a "kid size yak" is probably a mistake. 12-14 ft and no more than 30"W is the way to go...

Yes someone has a great deal on an ok scramnler xt. 11' 6" and super cheap I'm likely going that direction! It don't have a lot of storage space bit it will be a nice little starter yak. And then maybe I get my wife a pescador(another toy for friends).
