Looking at getting a Perception Sport Pescador 12 Angler -
I have a 5 year old son - is it capable of having a small child ride and fish on this Kayak?
thanks Jeff

Jeff I think you would need something like a Native Ultimate 12 or a Malibu Stealth 12 or 14. I have carried many children in my Ultimate, and the Malibu actually has a childs seat built into the front hatch and the rear tank well.

I would place the Wilderness Systems Commander 120 in this category as well. I think the hybrid design works so much better for going +kid. Those side walls will keep them in the boat until they are the size where they can handle a kayak on their own. Then I'd go get them a Wilderness Systems Tarpon 100 and never look back. Picked one up for the girlfriend from MS this last month and we've just been more than happy with the Tarpon 100. It did 9 miles in its first week down the Lower Mt. Fork river in OK and was just a joy.

That being said, I have taken my grandson out in my Coosa. Made for two...no, but with a life jacket on and calm waters he was just fine sitting on the front hatch for a while. I would not take him on a long trip, or in deep water or fast water.

Not sure what your budget is but there are boats that can convert from tandems to solos. The Native Ultimate 14.5 tandem is one I would recomend.

I got the Cuda thinking it would be big enough for my 7 yr old to go with me. Size isnt going to be your issue. Is more about the ability to get him in a good sitting spot thats comfortable so hes not moving around the whole time. I figured out real quick thats not possible on the Cuda unless I put his butt right behind me. (Me and the boy fishing that close aint smart!) So the next best thing for me was his own yak. Went and picked up the youth Lifetime Wave 6ft for 100 bucks(comes with paddle). Added a nice seat for him.(daughter got one too) I must say I'm purdy impressed with that little yak. My 7 yr old can stand up and paddle it like a paddleboard. Been to wheelers and the brazos and those little things paddle around like nothing. My kids had no problem on wheeler for hrs and went all over that lake. Being that your boy is 5 I would get him one and tie him off to yours, every once in a while stop and fish and let him paddle around.

We were just at academy and my son whos about to be five could fit in the front hatch of the Pescador 12 although I'm not sure how comfortable it would be. Personally if it's financially possible I would buy him his own and just tie off to yours until you feel comfortable letting him paddle on his own, I think he would enjoy the experience a lot more.

Either the Commander or ultimate would be great choices. We even have several "rumble seats" that could be placed up front or in the rear.

thanks Jeff Yes,I own same boat and take my 5yr old with me whenever he's willing. Put him in the back, then once we set up he climbs up in the cockpit with me. If your on a budget, then the pescador is the ticket...if you got alil more to spend then go with one of the above mentioned yaks.

I'm thinking that new Kajun Kayak would be a good choice for taking a youngster fishing. Looks like plenty of room, plenty of stability for standing - just needs a second $70 seat attached to the rail system.
