I would like to hear from others on this subject.

What is your choice of live bait? I have used Shrimp and Mullet. I would like to hear what else I could try. Also in laymen's terms, how do you set up to freeline shrimp?

For the freelineing of shrimp just a small hook through the shrimp's horn so he can swim around freely.( No weight or cork.) If you want to catch big trout use croker on a Khale hook with a Carolina rig.The specks are more than likley going to be tuff to catch, I heard it has been raining alot down that way.If you can find green moving water in the bay you would be better off. I am not saying you cant catch them in sandy water ,because I have done it.The specs could be early they will normally move alot in the surf the end of Aug early Sept. Mornings ,and at dusk.Hope this helps.

Has been helpful. Thanks! I will take all the suggestions I can get and try them all. I caught 4 trout this morning, then it stopped. They weren't big big but big enough to keep.

I rather catch keepers than over sized fish, maybe just because I'm getting old.

I agree with MJHARTMAN, except when I free line for specks on shrimp or mullet, I use a Carlona Rig too. I guess it depends on the dept, current, and the type of rod and reel you are throwing. Usally when I free line I am throwing a 12 lb test on a bait casting reel with a medium action rod. I like to set the carolina rig to get distance and accuracy. It is easier for me.

In deeper cuts you can add or take away weights. depending on the dept you are looking for.

Thanks. I used 12 lb test. I was freelining with shrimp and caught 12 Sand Trout today. All keepers.

....."Surferguyrob", are you in a boat or wading? If you have a Yak head over to the old "Todd's Shipyard" where they used to have the dry dock and fish the hole if you want some Sandies.

....how many boxes do you want to fill up??

Free-lining croaker and mullet is your best choice for live bait. Hope this helps.

For live bait I would go with live Shrimp..... Free lined Shrimp right now is what Im doing and we are averaging over 30 Trout per trip. If the currents are right free lined has been best but we have also been catching them under a popping cork. Croakers will do great in the summer time but live Shrimp will do the job all year long. When free lining try to go with the lightest split shot possible and if the currents are not to swift go with no weight at all.
