i'm fairly new to the area (now in marion) but i like the fact that alot of posts on this site are on area lakes. I recently caught my first calaveras red and am hooked, but interested in braunig mainly because of the boat traffic that builds up on calli. Also, i'd like to find some good areas to catch crappie, but don't really know where to begin or how to find them on the river lakes. Any help at all is greatly appreciated. Not looking for your hotspots, just a shove in the right direction.

One way to learn about a lake is to hire a guide. You can usually find out where and how to catch fish on a lake right away and you help a small business man. That's what I have done. You think it might be too expensive but making several trips to a lake and trying to figure it out yourself from "reports" too escially when you go out a few times to learn a lake.

First of all welcome to the forum and also to our area of the state. At certain times of the year lakes like Canyon and Choke Canyon, as well as the lakes down below Canyon can be hot. Our lakes and rivers aren't known for an abundance of Crappie and you'll find there aren't many guides that guide exclusively for Crappie, if at all, and there is a reason for that. That said locals who place structure do fairly well.

You might want to check out the Bluegill section of the forum as there are several local anglers who post pretty much daily and are willing to share their knowledge on what to use and where.

Also the advise about hiring a guide is well worth the time and expense as well, and will shorten your learning curve.

Good luck, there is a lot of good fishing as you will find out, and again welcome to San Antonio!

Just one more cast!

Boerne lake is a small paddle or electric motor lake. Has bass and an abundance of sunfish.

welcome To the Texas Fishing Forum. As for the Crappie in the San Antonio area. There are some here but they are pretty hard to find. peep I have fished the Guadalupe River and it's lakes over the years and not caught very many Crappie. The best Crappie fishing I was part of was on the Cibolo Creek two years ago and most of them were small ones. I have also not seen many reports on good Crappie Fishing in the SA area. hmmm I do know lake Dunlap, Mcqueeney, and Placid have a few. They are just hard to find. hide2

get some downriggers, a nice fish finder, and head to braunig! for the reds... don't worry about hiring a guide.. learn to read your graph and find schools and you got it! keep moving don't stay in one area too long

Me and a buddy of mine are looking to hire a guide on Canyon before the end of summer. You can split it 3 ways and get in if you want. PM me if interested.
