I don't have an h20 express mettle, but don't overfill it with too much line, infact since you are new you may want to run it a little low. Then adjust the tension knob so the bait falls slow when you push the button. If it has a magnetic cast control set it about 3/4 max. Now the tricky part .... you may have to learn how to ride your thumb on the spool where it wants to do it's main backlashing. That should get you started.

Specs says it has a 6-pin centrifugal brake system, so the left side cover must come off to adjust the centrifugal brake.

Did you throw away the directions?
Adjust your fall like mentioned above and remove the palm side cover and pull out the pins (Engage however many you need to contact the braking surface to fine tune your cast) Start heavy on adjustment and then lighten up as you become better at casting. Remember that you do not have to rare back and sling that reel. A slight pendulum motion with your wrist is all it really takes. You are probably slinging it too hard.
The best bet though, is read the directions and practice, practice, Practice.
Good Fishing!

Something I thought is helpful is to walk off as much line as your maximum cast distance then add about 20 yards. Go back and put a small piece of tape over the remaining line on the spool. This way, when you birds nest, it can only go down to the taped area.

No need to get another reel yet. Mettles are great for the money. Just adjust the round tension control knob pictured above. Turn it away from you to tighten it. For starters tighten it enough to where the bait or lure falls slowly and the spool stops when the bait or lure hits the ground. As you get better you can loosen the tension on the spool. As the guys said above use your thumb to stop the spool or slow it down when nearing the end of your cast. Don't overfill the spool. Leave about 1/8" or so left. Hope this helps. Tight Lines!

Mettle is a good reel at a great price (Occasionally go on sale for $29.99). The centrifugal system comes standard with 3 of the 6 possible pin's on/active (Apply all 6 if necessary and work your way down over time), based on the several I've purchased. You will most likely lose some distance but at least you will correct a common mistake, which will pay off in the long run. As I understand it, the centrifugal system helps maintain control during the initial cast while the tention knob helps slow it down after the bait makes contact with the water. Use the above steps to adjust the tention knob setting and learn to control your spool to not only prevent backlash but put your bait on target.
