Hello all, for Christmas, I recieved the BPS White River Fly Tying Kit. Only Sunday was I able to use a bobbin, as my kit neglected to include one. Since yesterday evening, I have tied 15 or so flies, with 1 or 2 for sunfish. Be fore warned, these are ugly as anything, and I appologize if your Optromitist gets a phone call soon. Some of these designs I got from Lefty Kreh's instructional video, two or three I got off of here! But most came off of what looked good to me. Once more, these are ugly, and most are mishaped, but I am proud of them My Latest-First Size 10 Eagle Claw, Flourescent Green thread, Silicone "legs One of the designs I got off of here My failed attempt at Lefty's "Indestructable Wooly Buggur" Lefty's "Bendback" A "Wounded Baitfish" popper; Black thread, White Bucktail, White silicone, and red flash My Flourescent Green Clouser; Fl. Green thread, Fl. Green Marabou, Medium weight Fl. Green dumbell eye My Weedles Fly; Olive and Black Bucktail with 2 strands of purple Flashabou and Olive thread. I forget where I found this one, Youtube maybe; Fl. Green thread, Black Bucktail and copper flash My "only fly that came out right" fly, and I might have had some visual help on this one; Black thread, Black Bucktail and Purple Flash My "Panfish Nymph"; size 10 EC hook, Olive thread, Olive Bucktail, Purple Flash and Copper Flash.

Those are certainly "buggy" flies and I am sure that fish will enjoy them. To get some practical help go to a BassPro shop on a Saturday morning when they give tying lessons or join a fly fishing club and attend their fly tying sessions.

Congratulations! Just wait until you catch a fish on one that you tied yourself and you'll be just as helplessly addicted as the rest of us.

Once more, these are ugly, and most are mishaped, but I am proud of them Nothing wrong with that! Youtube is one of the best resources for learning to tie flies, especially if you don't have access to sit down and learn from someone knowledgeable. Pick a few flies you want to learn, and get the materials for those flies. You will have them all sexylooking in no time! The other guys on here have a ton of experience and can give you all sorts of tips. One other thing, deer hair can be pretty challenging to work with, especially if you don't have strong thread. Good luck and have fun with it!
Let us hope that the bass do not find the equivalent of the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch.

Thank ya. And I've been on there more today than I normally do in a week. I do know I break my thread easily, especially when I start tying fast, and close the the hook. But I'll keep practicing!

Sometimes the uglier the fly the better it works.Should have seen some of my first attempts. Never thought they would work but after catching a bunch of white bass on them I was definitely addicted. Just keep tying and use your imagination. Good luck!!!

We all break our thread from time to time. You might try just starting the thread on a hook and then pulling on it till it breaks to see how much pressure it can take. All threads vary from type to type, but the more pressure you use the stronger the tie will be. Also cleaning up broken thread is much easier thancleaning up ANOTHER spilled bottle of glue. I know a good bit about that.
You might check at your closest fly shops to see about taking some beginner fly tying classes. This is something that is much easier learned under close supervision at first...it can easily lessen the frustration level. You might also ask if they know of any groups that tie as a group from time to time. It can realy help when you ask how to do something for about three guys to show you different ways to achieve the same goal. Besides it is just a lot of fun.
You can go to FFF.Org to find the location of various fly clubs.
Careful about buying too many materials till you learn what you like to tie. I probably have enough around here to keep several folks tying for a lifetime, but still think of things I need to pick up constantly.
You might also read thru some of the old threads about fly tying around here. There has been a lot of good advice given for several years. You also have to have your BS filter turned on...after all it has been many years ago that Lefty kreh said that there is more BS found about fly fishing than there is in a Kansas feed lot.
Have fun with this stuff.

Good job on the flies. Check out Hobby Lobby (weekly 1 item 40% off coupon) and Dollar Tree. They both have items you can use to make flies at low prices. Allens Fly Fishing has good cheap hooks with free postage. There is a Beginners Fly Swap series starting up at Fly Anglers On Line. Check these out, if you are interested.
