Actually, a true perch is white, this fish is in the perch family and would be labeled as a sauger/saugeye or Yellow Perch.
perch are predominant Northern white fish, color in the perch familial was considered a member of the sauger or saugeye.
Don't ask me why I should know this, being an old man from thee Yankee side of the country- I have probably caught 10's of 1,000's of the perch fishy's between Lake Michigan to all the small impoundments within 200 miles of Chicago, but that was so long ago..
Either way they are a fun little fish to catch and the eatin is ummmmmm goooood...

I have caught many sauger/saugeye in Ohio and they are nothing like this. However, you can go out in the big lakes up there and catch yellow perch. Just sayin.

Names are funny. You guys call them yellow perch in America. In Australia, they are called red fin. Use to catch them all the time. If you get them in a feeding frenzy with a small jig head and a Mister Twister curly tail, you can catch more then a 100 fish in a school. Only problem is that, the more there are, the smaller they get. When the number drops from the other fish eating them, then they can get big, up to 14" sand bass size and bigger. I've caught one over 2lbs before.
