My buddy has three pet snakes...Sand Boa, Rainbow Boa, and a white Rat Snake (ghost..cool looking, pure white with blue eyes)
I myself don't like to handle them.

Sand boas and rainbow boas are cool looking snakes too. Those coulbrids like the rat snake can have some pretty amazing color patterns.

1 large frozen/thawed rat every 10-14 days.

Do you get the rats at the pet store or do you order them online? I figured they would have to eat more often than that.

I get them from petco, but it's cheaper to buy in bulk online. I just don't have enough freezer space for 10-20 large rats.
A lot of people overfeed boa's now days, because bigger snakes sell in the pet trade. So some people suggest more frequent feedings than others, but I feel 10-14 days is appropriate. You can tell when they get hungry too, they will almost pace in their enclosure. He will be moving up to jumbo rats by his next shed I think.

My gf didn't like him at all at first, but he's grown on her and she's attached now. She wont hold him, but she gets him rats when she thinks he looks hungry. I think it takes a lot for a female to purchase a rodent in any capacity, haha.

He will top out at maybe 7 feet. Maybe 15-20 pounds or so. Not too big that I would need another person to handle him. Red tail boas are good beginners snakes, better than ball pythons in my opinion. I've had both and the ball pythons can be a pain in the butt. Sometimes they wont eat, sometimes they shed in patches, etc. I've never had a problem with Joker. I had a ball python that was finicky about eating and shedding. It was a pain. You should keep a bottle of cheap 80 proof alcohol or rubbing alcohol around when handling the snake. Pour a small amount on the head if they do bite and hold on. I worked at a snake farm(for petco) and this method was used many times a day while feeding them. We had to hand feed the snakes live mice and by hand feed I mean hold the mouse by the tail and let the snake grab it. The worst bite I had was a 5' king snake bite my wrist and coil up my arm. Not too bad but when the alcohol hit, it uncoiled twice and bit just below the armpit. I quit when a Mexican black rat snake tried to bite me in the face while on a ladder. I fell, sprained my wrist, kicked 100 live mice everywhere, and had a 5' rat snake land between my legs while flat on my back. I love them but the wife doesn't. No snake as a pet in my future. I did find a Massauga rattler hit on the road the other day. I really wish I would've had the chance to catch it.

MHawk, where you located? I've handled lots of massasauga rattlers when I was the state 4-H camp director near Monticello, IL (Robert Allerton Park). 2,700 acres of land with many M. rattlers on it and never had one camper bitten. Fairly timid for a rattler - took a lot to get one to strike. Had one in captivity in the Nature cabin and would roll the 4' x 3' plexiglas "feeding case" out onto the porch at feeding time for the campers to watch. We'd use Hav-a-Hart mouse traps and feed it live mice about once every 10-days. It gave birth to 7 young while in captivity. I learned not to feed when there were several rattlers in the case so I built 4 smaller cases and separated them. Dropped (shook) a live mouse out into the big case with 3 snakes in it and two of them had recently been fed. The mouse jumped on one of the ones that had been fed and bit it on the head before the hungry one finally nailed it. Don't generally get more than 36" long. Neat rattler for sure.

MHawk, where you located? San Antonio. They are listed as a species here. I have a pic that 95% of the people on here would like since it is dead. I'll try to upload it later and maybe you can help on ID. I was just googling it and that was the closest this area.
