Two teenagers in a paddleboat were out in the middle of Lake Hawkins with no lights Friday night. Apparently there are people who think there is never anyone else on the water but them.

To those of you who night fish: do you always carry a spotlight and use it when you're running around with your big motor? Seems to make sense that you would, but I've never night fished and was just curious.

Not always. Always have one but use a 3 watt led head lamp mostly for running. If i am using spot light i cut it on and off. Couple seconds on and 5 or ten off. Never outrun the spotlight area. If i can see bouys and reflective tape out 500 to 800 yards will only go say 300 yards max before kickin it back on.

I was running out of Little Mustang once at just about 25mph and turned to go left to Big Mustang when another boat went by me about 10' on the right, no lights on the boat running about 45-50mph. I heard the motor and turned my head and all I could see was his sonar light, I had just come by the Mustang resort ramp and there were no lights any where and that was the only place he could have been. If I turned right he would have hit me in the side.
I have a spot light that my wife holds up while I drive and even with that we never saw him.

Yes, I always carry a spotlight. I only use it occasionally if I'm in what I know is open water. If there's anywhere near a full moon you can see surprisingly well once your eyes get adjusted. Between the moon, a GPS trail, the occasional spotlight...and watching constantly where I'm going...I have very little trouble getting around on the lake at night.

When I get into narrow areas, timber, or anywhere I think there could be hazards I idle.

Does not sound like he spoke to them.. It's easier to post on the internet than approach someone.

i did not see them, there was an idiot running a jon boat with only navigation lights up front. hard to see from the backside.

I am begining to believe that I keep catching the same fish over and over on that lake. it has really gone down hill.

Just thought I would update...

The same idiot in the jon boat was out there most of the night Friday night, running all over the lake. I don't think he actually has any real running lights on board. Occasionally I could see something that looked about as bright as a cigarette lighter at the bow.

It would have been bad enough if the was sitting still somewhere, but he ran up and down the lake numerous times.

And no, I didn't say anything to him. I never got within 100 yards of him and he was always running. I wasn't going to try to chase him down and make a citizen's arrest.
