I am starting to make some considerations on how I am going to keep anything cold. I will be on the river from Saturday through the following sunday (9 days, 8 nights) After the second day I will pass Rochelles and can get a fresh bag of ice there.
The question this: Can I put dry ice in my cooler and keep my drinks under it? I believe drinks under it will freeze, anything on top will be cooled. Anyone have experience with this?
I will freeze 12 bottles of water and bring gatorade powder to mix with it. I also have a filter system for my drinking water beyond the 4th day, when I figure to be out of cold or frozen waters. I am bringing a 30 qt cooler.
Thanks Steve

Thanks, forgot about that old post, heck I even gave my two cents on that one. Thanks for jarring this old man's memory

Sounds like a great trip you're planning Texas Steve. Are you going all the way to Granbury? I have one of those water filter systems also. I haven't used it on that stretch of the Brazos. I have heard though, and others who actually know may want to chime in, that the water on that stretch will still be extremely salty after being run through the filter. I did a 10 day summer trip on the Llano once using regular ice. It was all melted before two days and I had bacon and polish sausage floating around in cool to lukewarm water. By the 3rd day the bacon was pretty fragrant, the sausage begin to take on a greenish tint. We ate it though and never got sick.

I am still working out the plans on my distance. I would like to go the entire way to granbury. The only thing i will need in the cooler are my drinks, nothing else. THe gatorade and tea powders will mix with my filter water to offset the mineral taste. I filtered water last fall when i was on the first 18 miles, it was salty but fine.

Anything under the dry ice will freeze, and it will also make your dry ice evaporate faster.
Put dry ice on the bottom, then put a towel over it. Then stack in your drinks. Don't add loose ice.
Where are you planning to take out after 9 days, and when are you going?

Not sure where I am taking out yet, working on the transportation plans now. I am going the 14th-22nd of July.
