Very nice. Obviously a little south of Texas.

That is funny--and obviously comes from someone who hasn't been down here--Very safe in this part of Mexico but if you would rather run 40-60 miles offshore there I guess that is your choice. I would rather be down here, pay $200 and be on fish 5 minutes after leaving the beach.

"Quintana Roos plush Playa del Carmen, long a haven for North American and European tourists, was the scene of presumed narco violence early this morning. Shortly before 6:00 a.m. Tourist Police Chief Mario Gmez Fras was shot several times and found dead in his patrol vehicle. He had sustained a head wound.

A second officer accompanying the chief as his bodyguard suffered at least four gunshot wounds but survived. He was taken to a local hospital and operated on at about 10:30 a.m. The officer was in stable condition.

Witnesses reported hearing at least seven shots. Others say the attack appeared to be an ambush, with multiple gunmen walking up to both sides of the patrol vehicle while it was stopped and firing inside at close range.

In recent months Quintana Roo state has experienced increasing levels of drug related violence, including murders. Police in Playa del Carmen say they began receiving threats after four drug dealers were arrested recently in the tourist zone. In a press conference today the mayor, Filiberto Martnez Mndez, acknowledged that the community is confronting security issues.

Mexican authorities maintain that the feared cartel Los Zetas controls most organized crime activities in Cancun and Quintana Roo."

Sounds safe enough to me...........

If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles.

I agree ditkarulz you had better stay away from some other dangerous places like Dallas, Houston, and Austin.

@Bluewave Mike: I gave it to the capt. I have released all of the sailfish I have caught here in the past(and was never even shot at!) but when we brought this one in the boat it broke its bill at the bridge of its nose.

Do you trust a politician to tell you when something is safe? One that would gain something by lying? That said it is safer there than most of Mexico. The bad parts are where the cartels are fighting one another and the Zetas have that area wrapped up. I was more playing devil's advocate but there is still more risk than they tell you.

DALLAS A shadowy Mexican drug gang that sprang from the Texas-Mexico border region just a dozen years ago has made North Texas a key hub in a criminal enterprise that now extends through Central America and into Colombia, law enforcement officials say.

The notoriously brutal group known as the Zetas has used family and personal connections to make the Dallas area into a sophisticated distribution point, moving cocaine, pot and methamphetamine to other U.S. markets and sending weapons, ammunition and millions of dollars in bulk cash back to Mexico,

Well said Jedi. Love the Royal Hideaway in Playa. Partied @ Senior Frogs till it closed and walked down the beach to the resort. No issues.

Didn't go for tarpon as I got offered a free trip on another chartered trip--just me and the guy that paid for it so hard to pass up. Fishing was pretty slow but I caught a couple of cudas and lost a nice grouper.
