I assume you use drop shot WITHOUT a float?

Need to improve my LMB fishing, running out of time.

No Float!

Side Note: I use the basic split shot rig. I do know a lot of anglers who use nothing but the drop shot method and they have fantastic results almost all of the time. hooked

Yeah, it's a great rig. I came to the party late, but I use it when I'm fishing deeper than 6' or so. Just another great arrow to have in the quiver.

I'm curious about this technique, can anybody post some pictures? Also, what lures and baits work well? How do you fish it? Thanks

You can google drop shot rig and probably see pictures, but I'll give a short explanation. you tie a small hook on your line, leaving a long tag end. Then you attach a small sinker to the end of the line. Whey you cast it out, or drop it straight down below the boat, the the sinker goes to the bottom and you should keep a fairly tight line. This holds your bait/lure off the bottom, suspended above the sinker that is on the end of your line. They even make a special sinker for a drop shot rig that clips onto the end of the line and that will pull off if it hangs up, thereby saving all but the sinker. The distance between the hook and the sinker is normally six inches to a foot or so, but you can experiment with this. Hope this helps.

Hmm....I'll have to look into this. I'm assuming a split shot could/would work with it.

So how do you work it? Just bump it off the bottom with a slow retrieve?

Soft plastics are the norm and what I use the most on drop shot rigs. Usually the slimmer and less appendages, the better. I've heard other anglers use micro jigs dressed with marabou, feathers and what not. A tiny grub, tube or worm is usually what I reach for.

I used to use split shot on the bottom of my drop shot rigs. Split shot doesn't really terminate the rig just right. A 1/8th - 5/16ths bell wieght or drop shot weight works much better than a split shot of the same size. Multipule split shot is even worse. Hope this helps.

Sometimes fish will take a D/S bait on the drop. Other times they take it while you are holding it still. Wiggle the rod tip from time to time to give the bait a little action. But let it sit still for periods of time. The bait is never actually still since the water movement moves the bait around.

As an alternative, you can cast it out away from the boat and slowly work it back, but it is more often dropped straight down and fished in one place.

The technique started in the deep, clear lakes in California and soon found its way to other parts of the country. I used to fish a deep, clear water lake and would usually fish it under boat docks for bass. Bass and sunfish often congregate under boat docks, so it works well in those places. Obviously, it works best in clear water situations.

I fish mostly deep clear water lakes so I use the drop shot 90% of the time, with either live bait or gulp products, as far as the weight it depends on what depth I'm fishing the deeper the heavier

hope this helps
