I got into a discussion with my buddy in Fl, and wanted some other opinions.
Whats the big deal about the Bimini Twist?
Whats the main reason it was developed?
With the advent of new lines is it becoming a "Dead Knot"?
If it is so great, how come nobody that I know of uses it inshore?

mostly for shock absorbtion in the transition from main line to leader. Its also recognized as tourny legal by IGFA I believe.

Bimini Twist is more of an offshore knot? Seems a bit much for not monster fish...lol.

The purpose of the Bimini Twist is to give you a double line at the end of your main line, mostly for abrasion resistence and to put a loop at the end of the main line. No, it's not a "dead knot" and yes, it's primarily an offshore knot. It's one of the best ways to put a loop in a solid core line. Hollow core can be spliced

Pferox, I would like to answer you as follows:
The bimini is in essence not a knot. If you look at the way the "knot" is made, you will notice that it is mainly the wrapping of 2 lines together causing a shock absorbtion effect like jdsibert mentioned since the 2 lines can still stretch even if wrapped together. The knots that you make on the bimini is merely to keep it from unraveling and play no part in the strength of the bimini. In fact, a bimini when made correctly is more than 100% stronger than double the strength of a single strand.
It was designed to tie thinner line to a thicker line like in the case of a leaderline.
We use the bimini extensively for rock and surf fishing when targeting inedibles like sharks and big rays. Some guys still prefer the spider hitch to the bimini because of time constraints but it is not as strong as the bimini because it is a knot that you can tie quickly. In my opinion, the bimini is the only way to join thin line to thicker line although I use the albright knot when fishing for smaller fish up to about 80lb.

Thanks for the insight guys. The way this all started was that my buddy and I were talking about the albright knot slipping with braid to mono leader on light tackle.
I told him if he was having a problem with the knot, he should try a Bimini on the main line, then use the loop to tie the albright on to.
That's when it got a little umm in depth on the Bimini.
I haven't had any knot problems, but wanted to ask from the gang that knows.

Pferox, with regards to the problem with the albright slipping, there is a simple solution. My albright also tend to slip from time to time and after a couple of questions posed to the right people, I found the solution. Make the albright exactly as you would normally do but before you insert the loose end through the loop to pull it tight, take the loose end twice around one of the "legs" of the loop before pulling it tight. This prevents the neatly bundled loops from slipping off the end of the loop under pressure. I trust you understand what I am trying to tell you otherwise feel free to pose any questions.
