Stick a 115 on there and be done with it. No reason to worry about structural or reliability issues for an extra 5 mph. Not worth it. 115 will be cheaper to buy/maintain and will use less gas anyway.

no law in Texas about overpowering..
Insurance covers , tell them the horepower..
25hp equals about 2.5 mph increase ..rpm is rpm
more noticed on low/end

Yes I am as I dont know any different. I assumed that the max HP rating for the boat was the bench mark. Is there a differenc in over powering a boat vs. overe powering the max rated HP?

Well, I'm not sure I can answer that question. I'm thinking the max HP rating is partly based on safety. That is where I would be afraid from a liability issue. Not worth it to me.

You're forgetting the other component of power rating. It's the weight of the bigger motor! Too heavy and you'll be taking water over the transom, everytime you slow down.

Safety is a huge issue as well as what the boat will physically handle without comprimising structural integrity. I know max ratings are on the conservative side which is why I asked.

If the metric of 2.5mph per 25HP is correct - a 150 really would only put me a little less than 3 mph faster. If the boat hull will handle the weight and torque of the motor I dont see a huge issue.

There is NO law in Texas on what you hang on what. Just like I can drop a 427 in a vega, if you've got the itch, go scratch it.

There are plenty of insurance companies that will be more than happy to insure what you've got (progressive) and as far as structural damage, speed warp or whatever, well, you're on your own, if it craters, I guess you learned a lesson, if it doesn't then you're a genius.

I've put:
115 on a 40 rated.
90 on a 60 rated.
225 on a 150 rated.
Currently run a 90 on a 300lb 15' scooter, no idea what it would rate for, it's a homemade hull, but it's perfect for what I use it for.

115 on a 40!!! grin Is that Genius or just huge kahoney's?

Like I said - my intent is not seek out a huge motor for power...I just want to know what to do if I find a deal on 125-150hp motor that is too good to pass up. A little over but not tooo much. I would prefer to find a 115 or a 120 but who knows what will turn up on the market when I get serious about a repower.

Ask Pat how to perform a breach turn, or hole shot in 1 foot of water.......

That's why you give it a little throttle when you come off plane. It allows you to surf the back wash instead of it coming over the transom and getting your back wet.

Call whoever you feel comfortable taking advice from… There are a lot of knowledgeable guys on here that have run and still run insured boats with more HP than their boat is rated for.

Take a look at the HP rating of the Ranger 518 and the ll8, exactly the same size & same boat but 50hp difference. Ranger said the difference was because of a structure difference and after more questions & research, the difference is in the transom. Another reason not to go beyond the manufactures rating is if you fish tournaments, you may enter but you will not win any money when they find out.
