After reading the post by Jigg'n Griff it really got me to thinking back about the times I have had in Arkansas as a kid, and the way that my life was influenced by the outdoors.
When I was a kid (a long, long, time ago) my Dad got transferred to Arkansas for about 5 years. I guess I was about 11-16 years old. When we were getting ready to move there, my brother and I raised plenty of cain, due to not wanting to pick up and move to a new state, for that matter anywhere. But after getting there and settled in, it was the best years of my life. Such a cool state with all the outdoors things to do, awesome fishing lakes, and Duck Hunting that could not be touched by any state in the country.
We fished many lakes according to what we were fishing for, but my favorite lake was Lake Conroe, fishing for Bream, mainly the huge Redears. It was common to catch bream that would go 1# - 1 1/4#. Sometimes would catch a monster. I don;t remember what the weight was, but they had a Bream mounted on the wall at the Marina that was huge, and if I remember right it was over 3+ pounds. We fished with Fly Rods, you could use any thing for Cane Poles to Rod & Reels, but the Fly Rods were my weapon of choice. You get a 1# - 1 1/4# bream on a 12' Fly Rod and it was ON. Great Memories during a Great Time in my life.
But my real passion was Duck Hunting the Greenheads in Stutgart. We had access to several thousand acres of Flood Timber, at 3 different locations. Watching those Greenhead pour in to a hole in the trees a hundred at a time was totally magical. Most of these memories you don't realize at the time, and especially being a kid. But even today, I can think back and still see these very special times. Like I said it was only about 5 years of my life, but it was the most informative years in my life. Great Times, and Great Memories...
Bream Fishing at Lake Conroe, Arkansas.
Bass Fishing on Multiple Lakes. Just about any lake in Arkansas was a GREAT fishery during the late 60's.
Duck Hunting at Stutgart, Arkansas.
Trout Fishing in the White River. Catching 4#-5# Rainbows.
Snorkling at Greers Ferry, you could see the bottom in 20 foot of water. Deer Hunting with a bow. we lived on the very outside edge of town, and woods backed up to our house. We could literally walk out the back door and hunt deer.
Reading the post by Jigg'n Griff got me to thinking about the early years, and the years that made me into the man I grew into (Good or Bad). Guys, I know we all think we lived a charmed life when we were kids, but I have literally live a Blessed and Wonderful Life. And I believe it was all started by these 5 years I live in the Great Outdoors of Arkansas.
Anybody else with childhood memories ? ? ? ?

Great post Cooter, I truly enjoyed reading it, thanks for sharing! Growing up in OK, poor share croppers was better than I deserved and I have too many memories to share but, as with you and everyone else, they made me what I am, good or bad. Now approaching 70 years on this beautiful planet I thank God every single day for giving me life in this great place at this great time and for all He has given me. I have so much to be thankful for that it just amazes me that I could be so blessed when so many have to struggle to survive. One quick memory that stands out. For my 9th Christmas, my dad gave me a single shot 16ga. I have an uncle that is 6 months younger than me and he got a shotgun that year too. We decided to go hunting on the old N Canadian river that ran behind our place. We shot a duck and were hungry so we built a fire on the river bank and cooked that duck! I took a bite and my uncle took a bite, he looked at me and me at him and each saw blood dripping off our lips!!! Damn duck was burnt on the outside and completely raw inside....never have touched a duck since!!!! But, what a great memory of times long gone by.
I'M SOONER BORN, SOONER BRED AND WHEN I DIE I'LL BE SOONER DEAD! Chickasaw proud. ![[Linked Image]](http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a187/Matthew__Carroll/newjigumjigs.jpg) CallMatthew@972-754-1698 http://jigumjigs.comMEMBER WALLY MARSHALL'S MR CRAPPIE PROSTAFF MEMBER JIGUM JIGS PROSTAFF

Anybody else with childhood memories ? ? ? ? CCK, Your post brought back many memories of the "Good Old Days" for me. I grew up in Central Arkansas and spent my first 29 years there. Moved to Texas 36 years ago. While I have learned to enjoy Texas very much, I really do miss the outdoors opportunities that I had growing up in Arkansas. I also fished Lake Conway (I'm assuming that is the lake you refer to since lake Conroe is just North of me in Texas) and caught a ton of bass and bream from that lake. Many days I would rent a wooden john boat and scull paddle and spend the whole day on the lake fishing and exploring. It's amazing how far you can go when you are young and full of vinegar. Now I need a 200HP outboard and 101# trolling motor. I fished all over the state, but Conway, being what I would call my home lake, was my favorite, stumps and all. I hunted squirrel, rabbits, coon, dove and deer, but my favorite by far were the mallard and wood ducks in the pin oak flats of the Bayou Meto area. I almost never missed a day of the season. I've seen sights that most people never even dream of when ducks would funnel out of the sky for 30 minutes to land on the water in front of me. I learned how to call ducks by spending time in the flooded woods listening to them and then talking back to them until I figured out what they would respond to. Just typing this brings back memories that will be forever etched on my mind. Had a hard time accepting the "Texas" way of duck hunting when I came here. In fact, I made annual trips back to Arkansas to duck hunt for years, but I've learned to like what I have here now too. Arkansas is a great state for outdoors activity and was much more "open" to the public hunting when I grew up. Unfortunately, outfitters and high priced duck clubs have surrounded the Bayou Meto area and it is nothing like I remember hunting wise. Thanks for posting this and bringing back memories for me!!
