I have been discussing the issue of oil injection with a few guys here in town and they say to get rid of it. They are telling me that if the pump fails that there is no fail safe to protect the motor. I have a Yamaha 70hp that is oil injected and its the first injected motor I have owned and I love the feature but I certainly dont want to risk any type of failure that will jepordize my motor.

So - should I keep it? Is there a fail safe to protect the motor in case of a pump failure? Or should I just remove it?

Can you afford to go buy a new motor outright?

I took it off my 88 Mariner and have felt a lot better about the oil situation. I know how much oil is in the gas because I put it in myself and don't have to worry about some type of injection failure.

Yep the 88 Mariner is a model to remove the oil injection.

I posted this same thread over on the Yamaha forum and the consensus is that the gear driven pump on my motor is reliable as long as check valves and filters are maintained.

I don't like em and have disconnected em all. No problem pre-mixing, really, how hard is it to add a pint to 6 gallons?? Been told by many that guys that fish the coast take em off cause if it fails, chances are you aren't gonna just drift to shore....maybe after several months, LOL.

Owned a lot of motors and never had any problems with oil injection systems at all. I had a 280 that I had to premix and that was a real pain considering how much gas it burned.
