Was wondering what would be a TUFF rod for sand bass and hybrids? It seems lite every time I take the kids a rod gets broke. Thinking of trying Ugly Sticks next. Don't want to spend a lot, in case it goes over board! What would be ya'll suggestions?

I use The lower end Shimano rods, from Academy $13.00. Put rod floaters on all mine. Have used them for a several years. I've used them on Texoma for Striper, caught Hybrid, and alot of Sandies on Hubbard, Catfish on Twok. I don't mind using inexpensive rods. I also have 3 Tournament choice rods from Academy. A few of dollars more than the Shimanos.

7' MH Ugly Stick Light! Semi indestructible, not expensive ($40), and they fish well.

I was thinking the Ugly Sticks would be pretty tough!

I use the medium action Shakespear Durango 5 ft 6 inch from Walmart - $10 to $15 I think. I actually prefer their action for white bass, and when they get broken/stepped on, etc. which they eventually do, they're inexpensive to replace.

I use uglys and Berkeley shock rods a lot. I really liked the jarvis Walker rods from academy but i cant find them anymore.

Ditto on the Ugly Stick Lites...Have been using the 7' Medium action ...$40....Have caught tons of hybrids/whites...Use them on the coast and have caught many reds over 30" on them...Best thing...if you snap one, bring it back to Wal-Mart and they will replace it.....

xray dock. You snapped a ugly stick? Wow! We have 4 or 5 that need some new eyes and a couple need foam or cork. But I have never seen one snap, however a tailgate can break one.

Really depends on what you are gonna do with them. If you are just gonna bait fish the Ugly sitcks would be fine. If you want to teach the kids to cast and fish artificials I would find a good deal on a quality rod and buy several---Academy has stuff on clearance and I have picked up several quality rods for under $20-- The floats will save you a ton of frustration with kids and fishing equipment. There is a multi-lake guide that I see out with floats on all of his rods and I expect that it saves him a considerable amount of money.
