I am reading fishing reports...it says "kingfish" are good. Does Kingfish refer to what we call whiting, which are actually Gulf Kingfish, or do they refer to King Mackral?

King Mackerel.

Of course, 'kingfish' is a rather ubiquitous name.

If you ask someone in California what a kingfish, he'll point to a type of croaker

If you ask this in Alaska, you'll be referred to a salmon

To an Aussie or an Enzedder, a kingfish is a yellowtail, but we Texans would call it an amberjack ...

It all gets sooooo confusing ... laugh

Thank you, Sir.
Lived here all my life understanding that a whiting is a Gulf Kingfish, a Mack is a mackeral king or otherwise. Also, refered to as Kingmack...it is so confusing. Although, I had never known "Whiting" as kingfish until I looked it up in a sea-life database.

Don't even think of asking to identify a "Skip Jack". That refers to about a dozen different species.

I thought that was a type of boat.

Just pulling your chain, stuck in ftworth. smile

Along the Texas coast, King Mackerel are commonly called "kingfish". The Gulf Kingfish, however, is more commonly called "whiting". Clear as mud, yet?

This is a King Mackerel, many would call it simply "king" or "kingfish":

Photo taken last summer in the Gulf off of Mustang Island at the Bluewater Kayak Classic. Mention of "kings" on the Texas coast always refers to these fish.
