I use straight on most everything and offset on everything else except swimbaits and frogs.

Offset because it works better with worms and makes a better presentation, plus the worms last longer and stay put better.
I used better three times, so it must be better!

I have used both, prefer off set because I did not notice any difference and the offset holds the bait better.

The biggest thing I like about the straight shank is where it hooks the fish You get a lot more hooks in the meat of the mouth (cheek and top)
Seems like with offset hooks I get more hooks in and on the lips. Which are way easier for a fish to throw

Most of us are talking about J type hooks and their variants.

You are not going to get a wider gap from the line tie to the hook point than you are with a straight shank PERIOD!
Yes it's not the right hook for all applications but for all solid body baits you can't argue it's the best +1

Do straight shank hooks affect the action of soft plastics? I realize that the wide gap hooks make fishing soft plastics weedless a little easier, but the hookup ratio with straight shanks is so much higher because of the angle the hook goes through the plastic. Why when flipping, do people prefer straight shanks?
It seems to me that fishing a straight shank should be the ideal method when fishing any plastic, but that is not the case. Thoughts? I never use straight shank. Plastics will ball up and that leads to worse performance under the water and ultimately worse hooksets in my opinion.

Apparently you haven't used any of the new ones with the plastic keeper on them. I use heat shrink tubing and put them on myself. They work as good if not better as the offset shanks, and allow 100% of the hook gap to be exposed for a better bite on the hook set.

Ultimatley, with a straight shank it's just like a jig if your using a plastic, if you stick one he's not going anywhere! When i hook a fish with a SS the last thing i think about is losing it.

I was using straight shank for near everything but while those "flipping" style hooks did improve hookups they tear up baits way too fast. So I went back to wide gap plus from owner
