I am not quite ready to buy another boat just yet, but hopefully it won't be long. I'd rather save up more and get what I really want instead of settling for something cheaper. I have been doing a lot of pricing lately though to get a feel for what I want will cost and have seen quite a few boats with new power heads and/or lower units on older motors. For instance, a 2005 motor with a new head and lower only a month or 2 old with low hrs. on it. Is there any reason to shy away from one of these? Would it be better to keep looking for a motor with the original head and more hrs? Seems like it would be almost like getting a new motor. When a new power head or lower unit is installed do you get a warranty on it? I know they wouldn't warranty the whole motor but seems like the new parts would carry some protection. I know not to just take someone's word it has been done, to see receipts or whatever but since I'm not ready to buy I didn't want to waste sellers'/dealers' time asking these things. Thanks for any input anyone has on this.

Just had the power head replaced in my 2000 Champ 223....basically a new motor...I'm hoping it brings a few extra bucks when I sell this winter to upgrade to a new I Class...

Replacing the power head will help only, if it has transferable warranty. Just the fact of replacing does`nt help the price.

New powerheads or lower units only maintain the value of the boat. It usually does not increase or dectease the value. Under normal sales. It might help presuade a prospector buyer to let go and purchase the rig. But mostly not. Some will even shy away from a new motor fix with the belief that it is somehow less than factory quality. This might be the fact from some fly-by-night repair dude, but not the case from a notable full time marina. Which also goes into if you install a new motor on an old boat.......usuallly the total value of the rig is about the same as the purchase price of just the engine. Whereas if you install an older motor on a newer rig.....it usually increases the value of the motor. All of the forementioned goes with a grain of common sense and the willingness of the buyer to fork out the moneies. If the rig is clean, solid, well kept, it goes without reserve that it will bring more than that same rig setting outside without a cover and braving the elements.

Thanks for all the responses, even you, opus! Now I know not to assume one with a powerhead replacement is automatically a no-go. Just have to make sure the installer is reputable/authorized. And good to know a transferable warranty is a possibility.

I have learned that you can even purchase warranty. Had a freind looking at a Ranger with an E-Tec about out of warranty. He got the seller to buy more warranty on the purchase.
