Anyone been doing any good at lake Whitney on the strippers "Strippers" are probably doin well down there, since the "striper" action on the lake is slow.

it is tough now after the recent GA fish kill. TPWD was trying to figure out the impact of the kill. Sad news. Do not recommend Whitney now. Been there this last week...tough!
This winter was unbelievably good with big fish most every trip.
There are some to catch, but i dont recommend it right now.
Good luck!

Wow hate to hear about another kill--I was hoping with the rain that we had this spring that would not be an issue.

repost from the redneck guide
I talked to the biologist and he said the gill net survey they did AFTER the golden alga and After the water receeded showed we still had plenty of fish that we just aren't finding them, 1.5 stripers per net with fish measuring from 15" to 30". I know the fish I have been cleaning, stripers and whites, are full of fingerling sand bass (yes, sandies eating sandies) and that told me we lost a lot if not most of our shad population so it's good to hear about the abundance of shad in the coves, evidently we had one heck of a white bass spawn as the fish I caught where around of what appeared to be shad clouds but evidently where whitebass fingerlings, and with the flow in the Brazos maybe we had a Striper spawn. I got on fat magnum whites (full of sandie fingerlings) out from the dam the other day and caught them 2 at a time on the umbrella rig and a report just came in that stripers where caught today up to 16lbs. Catfish has been biting like crazy but the Black Bass, Stripers and Whites had been slow to say the least. Been a weird year for a fact on Whitney, we had the 20+ ft rise in water plus all the releasing of water an early thermocline in may and the lake turning over in june. You could smell it crossing over the dam and the biologist verified what I thought. Hopefully they have just been scattered out looking for bait, I know I haven't seem much of any clouds of shad on my graph since the kill. The biologist also said we didn't have a bad kill and he can't understand why fishing is so slow that all he has to go by is the gill net survey and they don't lie. He said that they had game wardens out daily doing kill counts during and after the kill and that very few game fish where seen. Not a guide blowing smoke up anyones butt these where words straight from the Biologist. I got accused of that when I made the same comment earlier this year. So maby things will turn around and the bite will get stronger as the lake settles down. She ain't dead yet but she sure ain't been feeling good either. As always may God bless you and hope real soon to " C Ya on the Water."

I also visited with the bioligist for Whitney....
The thing that I got out of his comments was that he felt that the rapid water rise in the spring, doubling the water volume in the lake, was a big contributing factor. He suggested that the lake had been down for a long time and that the fish were accustomed to the structure that was available when it was down. But, after it came up, there was a lot of new structure in the form of bushes and small trees that had not been there before the drought that are now creating a lot of new cover.
Generally though, it has been my experience on the lake that the water has been different from its normally clear state... it has had a lot of particles in the water, some of it from trash, other that just looks like the lake is turning over. Also, I noted that folks who have caught numbers of big fish have caught them where there have been active shad and bait fish.
Bottom line, I think a guy has to find some reasonably clear water and some bait fish in numbers. That may be some of the deeper off shore areas and structure.
My personal experience has been that we have not found fish shallow. I do know that fish have been caught in some shallow areas... big fish in numbers, but they have been where shad were active or spawning.
I also know that based upon my personal experience, the fish are not where they have been in the past 10 years or so at this time of the year. And, we are not catching fish in the numbers and sizes that we did in prior years.
We just continue to try and sample Whitney once a week until we start finding fish again. In the mean time, if you really want to feel that tap-tap or that big jerk when they grab and run, I would suggest that you drag your boat on down to Aquilla. The fishing there is pretty darn good.
