I'm going to Port A thursday night for a little fishing and playing on the surf fri morning before going home. I was wondering a good place to fish with the kids at night to catch a lot of anything. I'm just looking to keep them interested for a couple of hours and maybe catch something to bring home to eat.

If you're fishing at night, especially with kids, I would stick with the piers. Horace Caldwell or Charlies in Port A. Not sure of the ages of the kids but at least you will have light (which brings in fish at night) and easier access. Almost guranteed to catch something. Live shrimp, jigs, spec rigs, etc will catch you some trout under the lights. Be sure to target the outside edges of the lights as that's where some of the larger fish cruise.

If you're going to in the surf Fri morning, I suggest going south of Port A on Hwy 361 and go to Beach Access Rd 1 or 2 (I like 2). Try to get there by sunrise (first light) and fish the first to second guts with a Gulp Shrimp on a jighead, topwater if the water is relatively calm. You will catch fish. You can also use live bait or even dead bait if you want to target the whiting.

There is also a pier at the end of station street, next to a large condominium. I have seen some large redfish caught there, and you can catch a ton of large gaff top.

Never made it fishing everyone was too tired at the end of the day and I got to sleep in for the first time in years. The current at the beach was stronger than I had ever seen and there were actually waves big enough to surf on. We did capture a little 5 yr old girl getting washed out to sea and the mother never even knew she was gone. she went floating by us barely able to stay above the waterand scared to death and being pulled out almost faster than I could get to her. SO be careful on the beach with the kids and watch out for drunk unattentive parents.

Thx for this great posting. The more experienced fishermen tend not to get into bad situations. Those who are new to the coast can get into trouble fast.
The little girl is the "best catch" you will make in a lifetime.
