Thanks Corbin, that is a good deal, but I bought a reel already and just want use it for a while.
I bought a Bass Pro Tournament Reel and Rod Combo for $80 last week after researching about ten different reels. I got to try it this weekend. It is a great real and rod and is very difficult to backlash. I would say you would really have to mess up a to get it to backlash.
Funny thing is I went back to the Quantum Optix just to see if I was having a good day andd with in 2 to 3 cast,I got a nice little backlash.
Thanks for everyones suggestions and advice.

A good quality baitcast reel is key. I did not realize how much a difference it makes until I impulse-bought a $100 Shimano reel for half price. I could not believe how much easier it was to cast then the cheap reels I had previously tried. Now I have three good quality baitcasters and love them.

Abu Garcia 5500C is an somewhat affordable workhorse that if taken care of will last a a long time. As for backlashes.... They happen, buying a reel based off of backlash prevention will cause frustration. Buy one that will last a long time if cared for and just get better at cast control. Been on the water using baitcast for 35 years.....I still get them occasionally and 100% of the time it's my fault, not the reel's.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an un-scarred and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways holding a 10# LMB in one hand and your favorite rod and reel in the other, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!

I have been using Ambassadeur 5000 and 5500C since the 70's and actually use those ole boys for bank fishing as I can still throw them a good ways. But when throwing artificials, I use a Shimano Citica 200E or the ABU Garcia Orra SX. For under $90, the Orra SX casts smooth and performs for me, anyway. I also own a few H2O Mettles that are sweet, smooth reels and used them alot until I tried the Orra SX.

Well for what its worth, I still have my old Zebco 303 and a few real old Abu-Garcia's, the only thing I updated in the last 2 years are my rods- being a clumsy old fart- I was tired of replacing tips, n eyelets- so I went with a no wreck em promise from the best in the biz- all my rods are now Shakespeare's both baitcasters and spinners- a bit heavier than a St. Croix? yep- but then if I wreck this rod it will not cost me $450.00 to replace it- I had St. Croix, and hated them. I've had Shimano- curse them till I die. I have 2 Penn open face reels for when I do go out and play in real deep water- they are as old as I am. I turn 56 in September- they run fine..
Fish with what makes you feel comfortable- hell you might like a cane pole set up and if it works- then fish it..
We all have an opinion, some are good- some are pushing a product.
better yet- tie a line to yer finger with a hook n bait on the end of it- toss it in the water- this is the PoMan's way to fish..just don't wrap it around your thumb..
