Deep Sea? I'm betting you can't find any water deeper than about 60 feet by 'yak.
I've seen some guys fish the outer surf and run a few miles offshore to the nearest rigs.
You should be able to catch big reds, shark, Jack Crevalle, King & Spanish Macks, ling and mangrove snapper. Possibly tarpon and others.
Doubtful that you would find any true deep water species like amberjack, grouper or snapper (other than mangrove snapper).

I got friend that runs out of PINS to the rigs in his yak. I think he is on one of these TX Kayak forums.

Yeah I am trying to buy a kayak pretty soon so I can go out to the rigs and do some fishing from there. About how far out is the 1st rig around PINS?

Looking for an Ocean Kayak drifter, prowler or the new tetra angler. But still considering the Malibu 2xl. Any suggestions?

Here's a few guys that do it in Adventure Islands. http://www.adventureislanders.com/

Those would all be fine choices. There are a bunch of structures within 5 miles of the beach near Port Aransas, and quite a few within two miles. Go with an experienced buddy first time or two. Or enter an organized event for new "BTB" anglers.

I ended up getting a Hobie Quest 13!!! Pretty much my ideal kayak for now. I am headed down to Port A August 22-26... Anybody going to be down there around that time? Would love to go with an experienced kayaker

We do it all the time. Mostly for kings, ling, shark, and jacks. We've caught snapper, amberjack, and grouper (usually small). Most of the snapper, lings, and grouper would be concentrated around rigs/rocks/wrecks. For the other species, just look for baitballs/birds. Large topwaters, spoons, trolling rapalas, and ribbonfish work well for bait. Usually best early and late in the day. If you aren't experienced, be very careful. You can get in trouble in a hurry out there. Make sure to wear a life jacket, and take pliers, small gaff, knife, etc... You get a hook stuck in you with a 30 lb king on the other end in a kayak and you've got problems. If you aren't used to kayaking in the surf, be careful. The hardest part is paddling back to the beach, kayaks like to flip over on the second bar.
That being said, its a blast and you can catch a ton of fish otherwise inaccesible.
We usually go off of PINS, although the Mayan Princess rigs can be productive as well.

Bullet had some great information. I have some experience dropping shark baits past the surf and just tried BTB fishing last year. If you haven't done it, I highly suggest you go with someone with experience the first time. You can visit texaskayakfisherman.com. They have a forum for just BTB fishing. The guys there are very helpful.
