I live 6 miles from Lake Houston and I have been driving to Conroe to fish. I am curious about it since I am so close. I am an experienced angler but have zero clue where to start in this lake. The east fork looks decent on map but I am looking for some specific insight. Any suggestions.....besides stay away!

The only places I ever fish on Lake Houston are Luces Bayou and the East fork. Start in the bayou, there are tons of places to fish back there. And if you are running from the main lake into the bayou, I would go slow until you know your way around.

I haven't personally fished there but I hear great things about Luce Bayou and there are some sweet YouTube videos of some guys tearing up the bass in their kayaks.

Its not about how many fish you catch or how big they are, its about the memories you make catching those fish.

As always, tight lines!

I fished Houston pretty solid for 2 years but haven't been on it since January. I would rather drive an hour or two and fish much better water and catch more fish. The water clarity on Houston was tough on my white fiberglass as well.

That being said, the East Fork and Luces may be the best areas on the lake, and they are the most fished. I have caught limits on the south end though.

Send me a pm if you want to know more specifics, I have pretty much deciced not to fish Houston anymore even though its 3 miles from my house.

If you live that close, it's worth learning. I live 4 miles from the north end of the lake and i have since 1987 from 80-81 we lived on the south end of the town and fished the south end mainly back then.

Since i learned the north end i rarely ever go back south, mainly because skiers cove is prolly the best area on the south end of the lake and it gets over run quick.

Luces is a good place to start, it has the most stable water clarity when it rains, so it is dependable, but has the most fishing pressure.

east fork is good too, but the water messes up easy with rain, same with west fork, but it has a ton of wake boat traffic.

west fork probably has the least amount of fishing pressure, and some good fish are in there, but after 10 the wakeboards will drive you nuts.

I fish it by myself alot when my team partner has to work and can't pre-fish.

if you want to come with me sometime to see how to run into and out of the bayou and rivers from the main lake let me know, it's not too bad right now as the water is close to pool level, but there are still some hazards with the water up like it is.

when it gets low later in the summer if you don't know it it's really dangerous to be running in the north end.

Thanks for the info guys. Caught a few this morning. Not a bad bite at all. Feels like a fun lake to try to figure out. Spent the last 5 years fishing out of San Antonio. Glad to be back east.

It's not a bad lake. I like the South end myself a lot of little cuts and creeks to fish. Grab a watermelon lizard and go to work.

Lake Houston is probably one of the worst lakes in I have ever fished. I would never fished it if I didn't live on the lake. It has taken me a long time to get to where I can catch fish regularly. I never go south but north is good. The east fork is my favorite spot on the lake but it gets muddy in there really quick. It doesn't fish like any other lake ive ever fished before that's why it has taken me so long to catch fish. Its not a pattern lake but more a spot lake. You will need luck or patience Bc ive seen many really good fishermen not even attemptto try and learn the lake.

It's a pattern lake, just not enough good sized fish for them to be everywhere on a pattern

I put together two different patterns today, and repeated results in all the similar areas i hit.....

It's a tough lake, and there are bass everywhere, finding the good sized ones is a problem at times, and others not , the fish move ALOT on that lake. When you find good fish you have to stay with them, miss them for a week or two and there's no telling how far they have gone, and how long it will take to locate them again.

it's over run with 12-13" fish right now, you catch the odd 4lb fish by itself sometimes, but for me it seems the big fish move in packs on that lake.

It definitely fishes different than texas lakes though, the whole lake seems like it fishes more like a river than a lake, not just the river part.

But then again, it doesn't have florida bass, it has native northern strain and they act and feed differently than florida's

The northern strain bass are actually more aggressive feeders more often than the Florida strain. I think this is why even in adverse weather condiions (post front and high pressure) it is still fairly easy to catch fish on Houston. The introduction of the Florida strain should provide some larger bass if they survive four to five years. However, this one stocking will not be enough to affect the genetics of the bass population in the long run. If the organizaion continues to do this every year and TP&W will actually help the lake it could produce a lot more bigger bass. The Houston area provides TP&W with a very large portion of their yearly funding yet TP&W refuses to help by stocking the Houston area lakes with bass.

The fact I live so close to the lake I am somewhat committed to learning it since my work schedule rarely gives me the luxury of traveling 45-60 min one way to fish for a couple of hours on different lakes. Sounds like a challenge to learn how to keep on the good ones on this lake. Choke Canyon might have ruined me though....
