I am looking for some honest opinions about the value of a boat. My friend and fishing partner passed away last week, so I will be looking to sell his boat to get his wife the money since she gave birth to their third child the day after he passed. It is a 2004 Z521 Comanche Ranger with a Mercury 225 on it. I believe the motor has around 600 hrs on it, and just had some work done to it about 3 months ago. It got hit by the tornado, so there are a couple spots on the fiberglass that need to be fixed (does not affect performance). Everything else is perfect as far as I know. It has two very old Garmin fishfinders on it, and a HDS 7 with SS and DI. I am considering selling that unit seperate, but does anyone know what a good value would be. i know what he paid, but just curious if it has dropped significantly in the year or so that he has had it. Thanks for any help.

I don't believe that Ranger made the "Z" boat till a little later. So with that I am going to assume that it is a 521vx. I know it may not help much but it is hard to say without seeing the boat but I would guess that it should be worth around twenty thousand. It has some issues that are not going to help the sale. I would most defiantly get the fiberglass repaired. Insurance should cover that. You should look on some other websites to see if there are any other boats for sale that are comparable.

Just a couple things to consider... If it's a 2004 it won't be a Z521, but instead a 521VX. I know that boat is rated for a 250. So it's not maxed out as far as the HP rating. I bring that up because you will take a little hit in value.

600 hours is getting up there as far as hours (depending on who you ask). IMO though, it's not bad due to that's a little over 70 hours per year. But again, it will depend on who you ask. Regardless, the buyer will try to talk you down on price due to that alone... never fails.

Being that it's a 521, I'm sure it has a tandem axle trailer. This will help in value. I would attempt to sell the HDS separately as you mentioned. I think you would come out better in the end.

Now to answer your question... I think you're looking at anywhere from 18k-22k depending on condition.

Here's a link from NADA. This is bare bones price with no extras.

Good luck and I'm sorry about your friend.

I sold a 2003 521 with a 250HPDI last year for $22,500. It had several extras like HB998 and Hyd. Jack Plate and was in good shape, so I think somewhere in that range or a little less would be close. Remember that it is worth what you are willing to take for it and someone else is willing to pay.

Go on BassCat's site under the boats for sale. They have references for bass boat's blue books. When you look it up remeber that it values boats seperate from trailers. That should give you a better idea of where to set the price.

Also, talk with your friend's wife and see what her priorities are. If she needs money quickly you'll need to set the price lower. If she can wait and get every dollar out of it you may have to wait a while to sell.

thanks Bay...and thanks everyone else for the input. We are not really in a hurry, so it wont be given away too cheap, but I'm sure it will be sold at a very fair price. Thanks again.
