S-MAN, seems like that's too many. RPMS are measured often at wide open throttle. Check to see if they fall in appropriate range for your particular engine (check manual/sticker on engine). I understand your still in Break in but it will give you an idea.

If you are running 4500-5000 rpms at 25 mPH your setup is ventilating (not enough bite in the water). By lowering the engine your prop will be grabbing more water thus lowering rpms. Dropping/raising the motor can make a hude difference in RPMs up to 800+ - per hole in some cases.

The dealer should be on this?

My RPM gauge must be off. I was out today and was able to throttle up to 6500RPM with no problem. I did this for a very short period of time. At a reading of 5200RPM I could go 25 mph max, this was 3/4 throttle. At full throttle my RPM's went to 6500RPM and speed up to 35-40MPH. It seems like my RPM gauge is off by 1k. Any sure way to test this?

Superman - If that's a new boat take it to the dealer and have him check it. Sound to me like it may be off but you can't afford to take a chance on it,

I think I have narrowed down the problem to the prop pitch. The SS prop I have is an 18 pitch. Since I have been able to rev so high I have purchased a mercury laser II 22 pitch. Hopefully this should drop my RPM to the recommended range.

S man I have a TV-18 w/90 on it and I turn 5500 with the factory alum. prop and 5500 with a stainless but I don't know the pitch for either one but(stainless=hole shot gps 41.....Alum.=speed gps 43) I can tell you that I don't think you can go by the Speedo in the boat you will need a gps to really see how fast you are going.

My advice to learning how to trim is to have a good boatsman show you how to drive, you can mess up in a hurry in big water, have someone go with you in rough water because you WILL have to know how to do that. On flat water once on plain try to adjust the trim till you feel it gliding atop the water then trim it down just a touch, Don't be afraid to use the trim button it wont wear out and they are made to make constant adjustments. If you listen to your motor and prop you will learn what it sounds like and feels like when you are trimmed right for your speed.

Enjoy your New Boat!

Mercury recommends:
First hour
*Allow engine to warm-up for 30-60 seconds.
*Avoid idle speed for more then 10 minutes.
*Run engine at 3000-4500 RPM's most of the time, approx. three quarter throttle.
*Vary engine speed every 2 minutes.
* Avoid trimming engine up during operation.
* Short bursts of full throttle for ten seconds are ok.

Next Three Hours
* Change engine speed every ten minutes.

This is info from the Mercury Manual.

superman78,
In my 2003 Tracker TV-18, 115 Merc SS LaserII 22p I turn about 5100 rpm at WOT. My max speed (gps) has been 48-49. Hole shot is excellent.
