We have a Humminbird 798si on our Champion 202. The transducer is a skimmer mounted externally. I lose reading as soon as I get on plane. Any suggestions?

Your transducer is coming out of the water when you go on plane. This is due to the setback from the bottom to the transom. To get a reading at spped, you must select a mounting location that will enable the transducer ti be in the water when on plane. Note: this is one reason a lot of folks use a "shoot-thru-hull" transducer mounting location.

You should use a XP 9 20 shoot-thru tranducer for 2D readings. Connect the SI transducer and the shoot-thru to the display with the AS SIDB Y cable. That dual transducer set-up is recommended for high performance fiberglass hulls.
The transducer that comes with the unit is the "Standard" for applications world wide. A high performance, stepped transom, bass boat is not a "Standard" craft.

I have a different depth finder than you and mine will do this some times. My sending must click or lock in place. If it comes unlocked it is at an angle and will not read. Make sure your transducer is level. By the pic it looks like your is at an angle.

Transducer installation damages and sounding troubleshooting comprise the majority of all marine electronics issues. Your transducer is purposely designed by its maker(when wired correctly) to sound at optimum when making direct, unobstracted contact with the water. Follow the "RULES" and use the right tools. Safe boating...

I have a 798 also and was having the same problem. Transducer was not in the water while planing. I lowered it about 11/2" and that solved the problem for me.

For a transducer to work on plane it has to be shooting thru clean unaerated and turbulence free water. So it will be a little below the bottom of the lowest point of the hull.

The picture looks like it's tailed up. This will cavitate under the the transducer at speed. Make sure it is level with the hull.

We've looked for going on 40 years now for "clean unaerated turbulance free water" behind scores of boats...and have never found it. Kind of reminds me of a snipe hunt!

Wayne P's recommendation above is the way to go. If you have your SI/DI transducer set correctly for optimum readings, it will be out of the water when you get on plane. The shoot thru transducer will give you on plane readings, and the Y cable makes it possible to use both transducers. And you don't have to worry about choosing the right one when you're on the water. The unit will select it for you, based on the view you have selected.

The unit doesn't select anything and the operater doesn't either. The Y cable disconnects the 83/200 crystal in the SI transducer and connects the shoot-thru 83/200 transducer in its place. The unit only "sees" a single SI transducer all the time.
