I am getting the last things packed up for our yearly fishing trip to northern Manitoba. We will be fly fishing for Northern Pike and jigging for Walleye. We will fish multiple lakes around the Flin Flon area of Manitoba. We are thinking about doing a one day fly-in at some point during the week. There are seven guys, two trucks, and two boats going. This is my second trip to Canada, but my friend has been going 25+ years. I will be posing pics and video when I get home. If I can find some internet access I will post a few while I am there.

I just got back from Canada late Sat night. This years trip was the best fishing I have ever had in my life. We caught more fish than we could count. I brought home your limit of Northern Pike and Walleye. We made it to our lodge at around 10:00 am on Friday (06/01/12), got our stuff unpacked and headed out to Schist Lake to find some Pike. The wind was blowing but we found a nice shallow bay to fish. I did not get out the fly rod due to the wind so we fished using weedless spoons and spinner baits. We started catching fish right away. We ended up with 9 good take home fish (anything under 30 inches). We caught 5 over 30in that we had to throw back. The second day we went to Neso Lake to find more big pike. We caught dozens of smaller pike and a few over 30in. I got my fly rod out on this day and caught my first pike on the fly. I caught 5 or 6 smaller pike on the fly. The third day we went to Iskwasum Lake to fish for walleye. We caught our limit of walleye (12 fish under 22in) and some good pike trolling Rapalas and spoons. We went back to the lodge and ate some of the walleye and pike we had caught for dinner. There isnt much better than fresh walleye for dinner. Since we ate some of the walleye we went back to Iskwasum Lake for our fourth day of fishing. We caught more walleye and pike trolling around points and bays. The fifth day we went back to Schist Lake and I got my fly rod back out. I fished it most of the day. The fishing was great in the morning. I finally got tangled up with a big pike. I was stripping in my fly and got almost to the boat and a big girl came up after my fly. She ran a few times, fought for a while, and I finally landed her in the boat. It was a 38 1/2in 13lb pike which ended up being the biggest fish of the trip. The fishing slowed down in the afternoon with only a few pike being caught. On our last fishing day of the trip we went to the Cranberry Lakes. We fished a few hours in the First Cranberry Lake and didnt catch many fish. We then went to the Third Cranberry Lake (all the Cranberry Lakes are connected) to a place called Alligator Bay. It was about a 45 min boat ride to Alligator Bay, but there are usually some Master Angler (41in or bigger) pike in there. We got all the way over to it and there were two boats already fishing it, so we went to another big shallow bay to fish. We spend the afternoon catching Pike one after another for 5 hours. We caught 15 fish over 30in and to many to count under. It was the best day of fishing we had for the week. We also caught 5 quality walleye in that bay. I caught one 31in Pike on the fly that made a run all the way to my line backing. It fought hard, but finally wore down enough to get in the boat. My video camera battery was dead and didnt get it on video. It was the best week of fishing a guy could ask for. We had sunny warm days and cold rainy days. The wind blew some, but most days it was pretty calm. The only complaint was the mosquitoes, which seem to get bigger every year.

Walleye in the wind and rain or as the locals call it the walleye chop

I am intensely jealous of the pike on the fly. Thanks very much for the report.
