I use berkley cherry rods for my bait casters. Med Heavy. But I also have one with a medium for casting a sassy shad. Spinning rod set up medium light so you can cast it far. Academy used to have a tournament choice which is medium and I have one of my bait casting rods on it. Reels I use Black max and Bass pro qualifiers ( Left handed --LOL--) and they never let me down. I have several spinning reels with the best being a phluger and the cheapest being a quantum cirex ( I think ). Others will give you better advice

I have found over the years that you will not have any trouble finding the stippers if you know where to attach the pole. Just kidding you Mario. I use a BPS medium/heavy rod for the hybrids and stipers on T-Wak. Get a baitcasting reel that allows you to load up with 15 or 17# berkley big game line. You never know what will hit so go big. Follow Keith's advice on the spinning reel. Good luck out there.

I use abu garcia 5500c3 reels on bass pro mh 7' rods with 20b. berkley big game line. I can cast slab and big jigs long distances with no problems and they are heavy enough to handle a big fish

Baitcaster - ABU 5500 or 6500 (NOT BCX).
Rod - A 7' MH rod, the best you can afford.
Line - You can't go wrong with 15lb Big Game.
Spinning Reel - Penn Battle 3000 or 4000
Rod - 7' M Rod, the best you can afford.
Line - 10lb or 12lb Big Game.
Learn to tie knots VERY well. Learn to CORRECTLY set your drags. Change line OFTEN. Use SHARP premium hooks. A learning trip with a GOOD guide is money well spent.

I have over 20 baitcasting setups and 20 spinning setups split between both of my boats.
If you are going to jig I recommend a baitcaster in medium heavy weight at 6'6". Any longer and the risk of breaking the tip off increases significantly. Use the baitcaster reel of your choice, I like AbuGarcia Revo models you can keep tension on the fish and still have a nice rate of return. Put on 30# power pro and tie on at least a 2 oz jig. Any smaller and lighter and you won't be able to keep the smaller fish off long enough to get it down to the depth of the stripers/hybrids. If setting it up with a soft bait, I like at least 4.5" long bait.
If you want a spinning, I like a medium so that you can play them a little easier on swim and strike. I like a 20 or 30# power pro line. For a swimming bait, I want at least 2 oz, but will go to a 3-4 oz at times. The key factor is weight to speed of reeling. If the fish respond to a slow reel, I need less heavy bait. If the fish want a faster return, then I need a little heavier bait to stay lower in the water.
If fishing a lake with visibility greater than 3', I will tie on a fluorocarbon leader of at least 20-25# at approximately 3' in length.

BCX are junk. They are a failed attempt to make a cheap affordable comproable reel to those made in Sweden.

I use a Berkeley shock spinning rod with a Bps pro qualifier wide spool spinning reel, spooled up with 15# power pro. I can cast a 1.5oz slab a mile with that setup.
On my bait casting reels I use only Abu Garcia's on the new uglystick sx2 rods. I wouldn't go smaller than a 5500c3 spooled with 30# power pro. My rods range in length from 7'-7'6" and from Ml-mh. Its not the hybrids you gotta worry about wrecking your gear......its the 30# catfish that follow them around!
it's the crapy days that make the good days that much better!!!
