Hey guys, I'm trying to figure out the best hook size for all these beaver style baits. My preferable bait is a New Wave Big Nasty. It has a narrow body around 2 3/4 in to 3 in long. What type of hook and what size should I use? Thanks

3/0 EWG shoud take care of business

This is what I would use. I also use this on a 7" trick worm.

You will most likely get other opinions, so keep in mind that that is what they are. I would start there and move up or down as you see fit.

ps. I throw those things in some nasty places and they pull out pretty easy. I am not sure what you're fishing, but this is a good start.

You may get several answers but a good general rule of thumb for me is anything in the 4-41/2 inch range, use a 3/o. 3 inches may be to short for a 3/o and you could possibly have to go to a 2/o, just depends on the bait and how much of the bait you allow to be threaded on your hook at the top, near the eye.

4-7inches= 4/o

over 7 inches= 5/o

If your flipping, do yourself a favor and use a straight shank.

I have heard this before... But why as opposed to an EWG?

On an EWG the hook point is in-line with line tie. Take your hand and the EWG and slide it virtically up your hand it wont stick.
On a straight shank, the hook point is completly exposed, =way better hook up ratio.
When my brother used to fish the co-angler spots his pro said he's lost prolly 50,000 on an EWG.
He's won a BASS open on Kentucky Lake and the Red River.

Makes sense, thanks. I started using a snell knot to tie on all my worm hooks, this helps swing the hook point out when you set the hook. The key is to run the line in from the underside of the hook.
