It's easy, but you need access to a barge. ours is a flat top. Nothing but a steering column and a cooler to sit on. We bank the barge, chainsaw a good size fluffy tree, go to desired length (we set ours in 25 ft and make the tree 15ft. load tree onto the barge, travel to the drop zone. Wire a five gallon bucket to the bottom of the tree. Tie a jug to the top of the tree (keeps tree upright) and a piece of monofiliment line. Make the drop, after the bucket is on bottom, we place a small cork on the monofiliment. Go get the fishing boat and find the cork. Mark the brushpile with GPS. There will be fish on it in about a week.

Not to sound too general, get your material (tree branches, cedar, willow, oak etc, bamboo), and something to weigh it Down (quicrete, concrete blocks, pig iron etc). Take it all to a spot on your favorite lake (a flat near a creek channel is great). Now throw it all in the water & mark it with gps or at least 3 landmark's. Oh, & you can prolly go to YouTube and search for "building brushpiles for crappie" & get more help

I usually pick my spot in 15-25 feet of water and mark it with a bouy. Find brush at the lake, preferably willow branches or hardwood. Tie them off to the side of my boat. Slowly motor close to the spot, tie the rock or cinder block to the bottom of the branches. Reposition the boat and drop them about 10 feet from the bouy. Find them with the graph and set the waypoint. It's suprised me how some piles are much more productive than others, so pick your spots carefully with some natural feature like creeks, ledges or points close by. Not saying this is the best method, but it works for me.
