I won't take my yak out without wearing my PFD. Whether "no PFD drownings" are rare or common, I don't care to be one of those statistics.

chances of being dead from not wearing a pfd are very slim. Its probably more dangerous to walk across the street.
Maybe if you're crossing a road blindfolded. If you spend the $ on a good pfd, they aren't that uncomfortable. It's funny when people spend 1k on a kayak and 20 bucks on an uncomfortable PFD. Weird stuff happens on the water. People have heart attacks, strokes, heat exhaustion, or head injuries. I don't care how "comfortable" you are on the water. Good luck swimming after suffering heat stroke.

Common newspaper last line when reporting a drowning: "The victim was not wearing a (chose one)......life preserver, life jacket, PFD, personal floatation device......!!!!!!!!!!
