^ very good reel and affordable. Of course, I don't have one.  but if I did I'd use it! Instead I use my Abu C3 6600s and haven't hooked anything too big for them yet; up to 30 lbs bull red and 16 lb carp. A big gar just _might_ tear it up!

I use a Penn Senator 113hlw. It's the older US model. It's a nice reel that's big enough for most any freshwater fish. I just picked up a Penn 112 but haven't fished with it yet.

6500c3 will catch any fresh water fish out there.  good reels but they lack the line capacity to tangle with big powerful fish like gar and spoonbills etc.......

After seeing the recent report of that 300 lb gar, i get the responses. I was obviously misinformed about how big alligator gar actually grow to. And now, im wanting to give it a try.

One of the best fights you will find in fresh water, I'm with you on c3s being awesome reels and catfish swim in my veins, but nothing pulls like a 100 + gar.

I would use my Calcutta TE700 375 yards of 65lb braid or a Tiagra over 500 yasrd of 65lb braid
