Have been fishing in port a since i was 5 and i want to try it on the fly. i been fly fishing brushy creek, llano, the guad, ponds, lake austin, and even did some good down in st croix usvi. i have heard the lydia ann light house trails is a good spot to fly fish if you rent a kayak. wondering if anyone else had an idea or could second that rumor. wanna take my 8 wt down there and try to catch anything that will eat a fly

Light House Lakes can be really good at times, but it gets a lot of pressure and sometimes can fish really tough. There is also Brown and Root, Shamrock and the whole back side of Mustang Island. Don't forget the jetties or the surf. They can be really hot and hold a lot of fish as well.

A kayak can help cover a lot of water, but can also make you over look a lot of water that can be good as well. Wherever you decide to fish, fish it hard.

If you have access to a boat then I would recommend the shoreline of Saint Joes island. Further north from the Port A ship channel you will come across long reef which is normally clear water and scattered reds up shallow. Follow the shoreline north and you will begin to see areas that are primo for throwing flys. Watch for low flying aircraft because the billonare who owns most of St. Joes island has his landing strip just yards from where we have fished before. Talk about spooking reds. Haha. I see your post is about a week old. Hope my recommendations are still relevant.

Be sure to practice that double haul before you go. Drifting and casting clousers out of your kenner will get you trout on the edges of the flats, and if you get lucky you might be able to run offshore a bit and find anything from bonito to Spanish mackerel to kings. Mybrainisflied made good suggestions for boating to and scout was spot on with his suggestions for wading and yakking. That whole area is very fishy.

Did you end up going on that trip? Heading down there this afternoon and would love to know how it went. Experienced but have never fished Port A.

Any flats that are wadable?

You can rent a well-rigged fishing kayak from Slowride in Aransas Pass ... reasonable prices, good folks, and good advice on fishing locations.

A good place for wading are the flats behind Fin and Feather Marina at Aransas Pass. Just drive around the west side of the marina and park on the peninsula. Watch for rays. Good spot for topwater flies: Poppers and Gurglers.

just got back from port a. i did ok i caught many 14-18 inch trout on a clouser and a few undersized reds on a crab pattern. went looking for kings one day and even with the clear blue water they were about 10 miles out still. tied up to a rig and caught some trigger fish with my 8 wt. that was the best part of the trip. caught so many that my hands started hurting from fighting them. i have a buddy who lives there and he took me giggin one night. i saw all the reds nd trout we spooked up and he told me i should go back and get my fly rod. made it back to our spot 30 min later and tore up the reds at 11 30 at night. the fishing is not great but you can catch some fish if you try and hardenough and throw some good patterns

That's what fishing on the coast is all about. It's no walk in the park but the rewards for hard work can be great. Glad you got into some. The kings were in all over the place, I'm sorry that you didn't get to experience them on the bonito that showed up two days ago.
