I will be in Port A June 5-10. Would appreciate advice on best places to fish from shore to catch trout, reds, etc. also would like to advice on best rigs and bait/lures that work well for this area. First time down there fishing so any other tips welcomed. Thanks.

Jetties are always the number 1 option. If you dont mind getting wet, surf fishing cant be good early sun up and late sun down. Just watch the rays on the floor.

Gulp! Shrimp 3" new penny Baby Trout Skitterwalk Topwater Small 4" Paddle Tail Saltwater Assasins Regular 6" Saltwater Assasins 1/16th oz screwlock jigheads
In the bay for reds, concentrate on mix of grass, sandy holes, and shell. Trout will cruise the deeper edges 4-7 foot and reds will be up shallow. You can see them with a good pair of polarized glasses.
Trout during the day, fish deeper. Lydia Ann channel and Intercoastal. The surf can be really good if conditions are right. Jetties can be good on certain tides.
Main thing is to look for signs of feeding fish. Bait, slicks, watermelon smell.
I use a 7' medium action popping rod with a shimano curado with 17-20 lb flourocarbon line and no leader. That will handle most reds, trout, and flounder you will catch.

Bullet, how do you get to Lydia Ann without a boat?
Do you take a jetty boat ride?

I like the Gulf surf..Use ghost shrimp found in the sand in the beach.Look for the holes at water edge. You will need a ghost shrimp pump to get them out.you can get the pump at many stores in Port A...fresh shrimp and shad are very good too.(Ghost shrimp are best--weave/thread them on your hook) I wade out from beach -past second/third sand bar above waist deep..to chest..cast out 50 yards ....line/wire leader hook leader-- spider weight..and lures...gold spoon, penny color soft plastics to pinkish orange color shrimp tails-Manns grubs,Med.chrome rattle traps, gold mepps #3 orange tube..chrome stick rapala with chart head or red heads and some with chart bodies with red heads..all lures cast out and retrive back slow..hang on.. I/we catch alot of nice whiting, trout, redfish, mackerel, small med sharks....you will get a hit almost as soon as your bait hits bottom ..normal hours are early and late......Note...you do not want to be shark bait in the surf.. So--do not keep your replacement bait and fish caught in the surf with you...keep them at shore in your bait ice chest. surf fishing places we like best is just 50 ro 100 yds south of BH pier... shuffle feet when walking in surf...it may help scare rays you do not want to step on.We always use zip on snake bite calf leggings --just in case... we always catch our limits of a variety of fish in the surf.. I think the big whiting are the best eating.. good luck and have fun...

Do you take a jetty boat ride? You can, but it would be quite a trek to get to the best grass flats from there. I wasn't sure if you had a boat or not when I answered your question. If you don't have a boat, there are some good spots directly across the intracoastal from Fin & Feather and Crab Man's Marina. Behind Hog Island can be decent this time of year for specks, reds, and flounder. If you have a kayak, its just a short paddle across the intracoastal to Hog Island. All the fishable spoil banks and grass flats you want back there. Both jetties hold fish this time of year, I just don't like fishing in crowds. They are already catching reds, trout, jacks, kings, sharks, and tarpon off of there.

Fishing real slow in Port A over last couple of days. Went on a guided trip today and fished various spots only to land a couple of specs. Fished just off S. Jetty, Lydia Ann channel and a few other spots to no avail. Water conditions seemed right but not any action. Tried manhaden on bottom for reds, live croaker for specs and several different soft baits. Slow day today. Thanks for all who responded on ideas.

Go off mud island back in Shamrock bay and wait until tide is moving in. Find the spot where the currents meet on the end of the island. Just fish with shrimp on the bottom and watch the poles drop
