My opinion is if you had a heavier rod and some 65# lb braid.. you would be posting pics instead of wondering what happened.. frog fishing tackle is one thing where it never pays to just make do. Get a broomsick and some 1/8" steel cable and hope you can fool her again  As far as what it was, no telling, but when I lose a big bite, it helps me sleep better if I tell myself it was a big flathead +1 If you are not using the right application for the cover being fished; you are asking for trouble.

This was my first thought!  I caught a 5' gator at our local city lake a few years ago. I had a 6' 6" MH rod, Diawa reel, 16 lb Stren Magnathin line with a 5/0 Gamakatsu worm hook and a Slug-O.  I didn't have the drag cranked down though.  Another thought is how often do you retie your hook/bait? BigDozer66

Big grinnels love frogs. If that lake has grinnel in it, that's probably what it was. They'll cut 17 lb line like a hot knife through butter.

heavy line +(braid)+ heavy rod (broomstick)+ heavy hooks = landing huge fish in heavy junk..

If your drag wasn't hammered all the way down you would know. Just because it's 17# test doesn't mean the fish was bigger than 17#'s. Bass do have sand paper teeth that will cut a line when hooked deep and there's no give on the drag. +1 - Gotta loosen that drag, and retie regularly!

like others have said broomstick and braid would have most likely given you the best opportunity to land the fish no matter the species

I had a bite at Fork this spring in about 10' of water. Literally smoked my jig. This fish pulled as hard as any I ever had on. I could hardly get her turned and coming up. If I had broke off i would have sworn she was a taod. As it was she went maybe 2 1/2lbs. Right then and there I made a decision not to size ;em unless I get to see 'em. I have caught my share of big fish and she pulled as hard as any I have ever caught.
