As far as what it was, no telling, but when I lose a big bite, it helps me sleep better if I tell myself it was a big flathead

If you are not using the right application for the cover being fished; you are asking for trouble.

I caught a 5' gator at our local city lake a few years ago.
I had a 6' 6" MH rod, Diawa reel, 16 lb Stren Magnathin line with a 5/0 Gamakatsu worm hook and a Slug-O. grin

I didn't have the drag cranked down though. wink

Another thought is how often do you retie your hook/bait?

Big grinnels love frogs. If that lake has grinnel in it, that's probably what it was. They'll cut 17 lb line like a hot knife through butter.

+1 - Gotta loosen that drag, and retie regularly!

It sounds like you may need a bigger boat and more barrels!

like others have said broomstick and braid would have most likely given you the best opportunity to land the fish no matter the species

you dont bring a knife to a gun fight

I had a bite at Fork this spring in about 10' of water. Literally smoked my jig. This fish pulled as hard as any I ever had on. I could hardly get her turned and coming up. If I had broke off i would have sworn she was a taod. As it was she went maybe 2 1/2lbs. Right then and there I made a decision not to size ;em unless I get to see 'em. I have caught my share of big fish and she pulled as hard as any I have ever caught.
