I've seen pectoral and ventral fins torn loose by nylon nets. If you need a net buy a rubber net with the smaller round holes.

I never actually net my fish anyway...I keep it under and half way around them while lifting them into the boat just incase they come off.

Right. Don't let them touch abrasive surfaces (carpet and old school net mesh), wet your hands before you touch them, and get them back in the water fast.

set the hook, kick open the livewell, and swing em in the treated water! I always try to out do FZ1! I use barbless hooks, also. One shake of the head in the livewell, and the hook is out!

Not even remotely the same. A hole in their lip is a small puncture in less than 1% of their body area. Damaging a slime coat on 1/3 of their body is night and day difference.

However, I'm assuming the OP is looking at a net in more of a tournament situation and if so the fish is likely going in the livewell. Just put some Sure Life products in there like catch and release of please release me and it will fix em right up.

Heck I've been fun fishing and put fish in rough shape in the livewell for a bit with additives for awhile and then release them after they've had a 'therapy' bath smile

Mods, Please start a thread on Fish care & leave it at the top. Especially going into the summer. Too many of the guys just getting started in Bass fishing watch the pro's flip fish in the boat, flopping all over the carpet. The new guys think it's ok because SOME OF the pro's do it.

That's like comparing a gunshot wound to cancer... You don't see the fish that die from slime removal because they succumb days after release to opportunistic pathogens.

Obviously a gut or gill hooking is going to be more lethal but it doesn't mean you should disregard other forms of fish care.

Ask the Lake Fork guide who refused to net my friends fish of a lifetime because it was not over 8 pounds and did not want to destroy the ecosystem.

In the hot summer months when a fish hits the dry hot carpet there is a chance its going to die later...I really try not to do that but sometimes it happens...We've all landed fish with patches of red or jelly looking stuff on its sides well that the carpet rash you're seens from another catch...Happens at Fork all the time...

I would say that elite series harm more fish in a tournament than you will in a lifetime with a net. Watch the way they pull fish over the side of the boat and let them slam into the bottom of the boat.... Makes me sick to my stomach, there's zero conservation in the way they treat fish.

Guys I am all for taking care of the fish but it's the nature of the beast we call fishing. All we can do is try to do our best to take care of them, but as with anything there is a risk
