If you just wait till it gets a little closer to you and calmly make your presence known it will veer away from you. You would think ... but a couple of times while bank fishing, I've actually had them veer and head straight toward me when they realize I'm there
This might be the weirdest, most pointless post ever. I am not against golf, since I cannot but suspect it keeps armies of the unworthy from discovering fishing

I've never had one let me get close enough to catch it! they always dive when i get close!! btw anyone have any good recipies? I wanna see how they taste if one ever gets close enough for me to grab.

I've heard that the Cottonmouth will swim with most of his body on top of the water and I've seen them do it. However I'm not sure they always do this.

I've seen quite a few this year while out on my yak, but they have all been non venomous banded water snakes. None have gotten too close to me, but if they do a paddle or fishing rod will usually do the trick.
