05 Yamaha Vmax 250

Ran boat yesterday had good power all day, pull it out of the water strapping it down I smell burnt Lower Unit oil. Just bought the boat and to our knowledge it had been fully serviced before the pick-up.

Get home and a decent sized chunk of aluminum comes out the exhaust/prop well. We've pulled about 5 pieces averaging 3-5" in length and about 1.5-2" wide-just enough to squeeze out in the space. Still lots of shavings and smaller chunks. Compression test shows 110 on all 6 cyl.

Any ideas what could be causing this? Thanks for reading and any suggestions.

Common problem on 250 Yamys. Directs the exhaust down for a pre-determined length to help evacuate the exhaust gas`s for better performance. Tuner is in the exhaust adaptor below the power-head. Put your serial # here: http://www.yamaha-motor.com/partviewer/default.aspx?ls=outboard

Their are motor issues that cause this, you want to have checked.

I am on my third tuner on my 225 HPDI. The replacement requires removing the powerhead to replace. I sure wish i knew what is causing these failures.

Ok all kidding aside, I have messed with racing engines on and off for most of my life and I have seen this before. This is caused by a lean condition. Any time an exhaust system on an engine gets this hot the engine is not getting enough fuel. Odds are the tops of the pistons are being exposed to the same amount of heat. I'd definately have it checked out by a reputable mechanic before something happens inside the powerhead your wallet won't like.....

From what I have seen this normally occurs after the yamaha has been run in real shallow water, ie: sand, etc and it gets in the cooling system. It then gathers in the poppit valve and all of a sudden your water pressure drops and next thing you know your temps start rising at idle. I have burned one up and there is a noticeable difference in hole shot once it happens. The only way I have been able to keep this from happening again is by running the interface cable from the engine to a lowrance depth finder and it then I can constantly monitor engine temps, etc. I have had temps rise twice since and now when they do I clean the poppit and all is fine, although still an irritant.

How much does one of those engine cables cost and how hard is it to hook up? Nobody tells you when you buy one of these engines how many fuel filters they have and how often they need to be changed. I have tried to stay on top of it now but probably didn't change them enough at first.

Was thinking I paid about 60 bucks for mine, but that has been about 5 years ago, so probably a little more now. you just plug it in on the starboard side of the engine and run the cable up to your depth finder or LMS 400 with a T and you are good to go. If you have the red connector units this should be the right part #. Lowrance Yamaha Engine Interface Cable -EB-5025194

This too. If that poppet is not controlling water flow properly, you can get an air pocket in the top of the water column in the engine and the top two pistons get cooked. Had something similar happen to me on an old OMC motor years ago. Caught it before any major damage was done.......
